11 moped and motorcycle riders died in Latvia last year

Although the official opening of the motorcycle season in Latvia is planned for 30 April, there are already more and more motorcycles appearing on roads in the country. This is confirmed by insurance data: the insurance company has already received three insurance claims to cover damage caused by collision with a motorcycle. Two of those accidents took place at the beginning of April.

«Motorcycle drivers and passengers are exposed to a greater degree of risk than people in cars. Because of that, they have to be especially careful. This is demonstrated by insurance data – accidents involving motorcycles almost always result in insurance claims to cover damage caused to the vehicle and injuries sustained by drivers and/or passengers,» – notes BALTA Insurance Claim Office Director Ingus Savickis.

In 2015, during the active motorcycle season, OCTA policies were registered for 26,668 vehicles (47% of motorcycles and 53% of mopeds). Data from BALTA shows that the average insurance claim for damage caused to motorcycles reached EUR 1,285 last year. The biggest insurance claim paid last year was EUR 5,590. The most popular motorcycle brands in Latvia are Honda, Yamaha, Suzuki and Kawasaki.

Safe Driving School notes that motorcycle drivers should always be prepared for potentially dangerous situations. Choosing the right driving speed can mean the difference between life and death in most dangerous situations. Another major factor is the choice of safety gear – jumpsuit with all the necessary guards, helmet and gloves.

Edmunds Ozolnieks, member of the board of Safe Driving School, notes: «The most often reasons for motorcycle road accidents are the lack of experience, too high driving speed, improper assessment of the situation and poor visibility. Motorcycle drivers should be prepared to identify dangerous situations and react to them appropriately. Always keep a safe distance with other traffic participants. Do not exceed permitted speed limits and do not endanger other traffic participants. Reduce driving speed if you encounter poor visibility. Practice your driving skills and choose the right driving technique. It is highly important for your safety and the safety of others.»

According to data from the Road Traffic and Safety Directorate, 11 moped or motorcycle drivers died in traffic accidents in Latvia last year.
