Last year, the number of people in Latvia with cancer was 77,822. The number of new cancer patients increases every year. 11,412 were diagnosed with cancer in 2014. Breast cancer is one of the most common forms of cancer.

Timely diagnosed cancer is possible to treat. Patients who are diagnosed with 1st stage of cancer have a 96.7% rate of successful recovery. If cancer is diagnosed in the late 4th stage, however, success rate drops to a mere 23.8%, according to information from Disease Prevention and Control Centre.

As part of the European Breast Health day and n order to motivate women to undergo regular breast cancer checks, oncology patients support association ‘Tree of life’ has launched a special charity campaign in Alfa shopping centre titled ‘Check and REcheck’. As part of this event, 12 artists have drawn decorations on gypsum casts of breasts. The little exhibition will remain available until 29 October.

Artists like Jānis Anmanis, Svetlana Skačkova-Marčenko, Anete Lesīte, Elizabete Melbārzde, Elīna Milta, Monta Brigmane, Marika Džule and others have confirmed their participation in the creative workshop organized for the charity event.

«With this campaign we hope to raise awareness about breast cancer in Latvia and encourage residents to undergo regular check-ups. Upon reaching the age of 20, every woman should undergo a check-up at least once a month. Early diagnosis of this disease can be treated successfully. We want to end the established stereotype about cancer and show that it can be treated,» – says CEO of Tree of Life association Gunita Berke.
