BNN offers you a selection of cultural events in Lithuania for the week during January 11 to January 17.

As Lithuania is commemorating the 25th anniversary of the Day of the Defenders of Freedom, a raft of events are scheduled to symbolize the resilience, kindness, and unity of the defenders in the country.

January 12, noon:

Meeting of the people affected by the Soviet aggression; Vilnius Television Tower;

January 12, 4.30 pm:

Opening of the exhibition For Freedom by photo artist Algirdas Tarvydas; Exhibition Gallery, Building 2, Seimas of the Republic of Lithuania, Gediminas a. 53, Vilnius;

January 12, 5 pm-10 pm:

Exhibitions, video demonstration, artistic compositions, painting workshops for children on the topic of Free Lithuania; Parliament Gallery and the Stained Glass Gallery, Building 1, Seimas of the Republic of Lithuania, Gediminas a. 53, Vilnius;

January 12:

Lighting of commemorative bonfires:

– 5.30 pm at Vilnius Television Tower, Sausio 13-osios g, Vilnius;
– 6 pm at the building of the Lithuanian National Radio and Television, S. Konarskio g. 49, Vilnius;
– 7 pm in Nepriklausomybės Square in Vilnius;

January 12, 7.30 pm:

Gathering organised by the Lithuanian Reform Movement Sąjūdis; Nepriklausomybės Square, Vilnius;

January 12, 8 pm:

Concert In Memoriam of January 13, 1991 victims; St. Johns’ Church, St. John’s g. 12, Vilnius;

January 12, 6pm:

Commemoration of the Day of the Defenders of Freedom in Kaunas; Vytautas Magnum War Museum Garden, K. Donelaičio g. 66, Kaunas;

Fiery and solemn speeches led with the ringing of Vytautas Magnum War Museum bells will mark the 25th anniversary of the bloody event 25 years ago.

January 12, 6.30 pm:

Performance «Carmen»; Klaipėda State Musical Theatre, Danės g. 19, Klaipėda;

Four-part famous opera by G. Bizet features a rising opera star, Lithuanian singer Eglė Šidlauskaitė;

January 13, 10 am:

St. Mass for the January 13 Defenders at the St. Archangel Mykolas Church; Kaunas;

January 13, 6pm:

Solemn concert in memory of the January 13, 1991 Defenders of Freedom in Kaunas «Žalgiris» arena; Karaliaus Mindaugo a. 50, Kaunas;

January 13, noon-12.45:

Solemn parade of the Guard of Honour of the Lithuanian Armed Forces and march from Nepriklausomybės Square to Katedros Square; Vilnius;

January 13, 1.30 pm:

Paying of tribute to the victims of January 13; Antakalnio Cemetery, Vilnius;

January 13, 3.30pm:

Commemoration of 25th anniversary of the Day of the Defenders of Freedom; Nepriklausomybės Square, Naujojo Sodo g. 1, Klaipėda;

The event will feature commemorative speeches delivered by the witnesses of the history-defining day of January 13, 1991 and will invite one to taste porridge that the Lithuanian conscripts are being fed;

January 11-17:

Exhibition «Life Nature in Art»; Museum of the Radvilas Palace, Vilniaus g. 24, Vilnius;

Works of animalistic theme of the 17th and 19th centuries (pictures, graphics, and sculptures) are exposed in the exhibition. The works are taken from the Lithuanian Arts and National M. K. Čiurlionis museums and private collection of Andrejus Balyko.

January 11-17:

Exhibition «Eternally young! Polish art at the late 19th century – early 20th century»; Vilnius Picture Gallery, Didžioji g. 4, Vilnius;

The exhibition presents works of art by O. Boznańsko, J. Fałato, A. Gierymski, J. Mehoffer, F. Ruszczyc, J. Stanisławski, W. Weiss, and a number of other famous painters representing art of the «Young Poland» period. Over 150 examples of painting, graphics, sculpture and applied art are displayed.

January 11-17:

Exhibition «Alchemy of Colours»; the Palace of the Grand Dukes of Lithuania, Katedros a. 3, Vilnius;

The international exhibition of Scagliola art works from the Bianco Bianchi collection in Florence is a joint Project by the owners of the private Bianco Bianchi collection Alessandro Bianchi and Elisabetta Bianchi, and the National Museum – Palace of the Grand Dukes of Lithuania and the Vilnius Academy of Art.

January 11-17:

Exhibition «Study of Collector»; the Church Heritage Museum, Šv. Mykolo g. 9, Vilnius;

The exhibition is not only a traditional showcase of exhibits, but also gives a museum visitor an opportunity to pick up some of the most important manuscripts and collections of graphics of the 18-20th centuries of the priest Pranciškus Tičkovskis’ collection: cuneiforms, postcards, manuscript books of Vilnius Bernardians, archives of Akmenynės church, stamps of graphics, prayer books and et cetera.

January 11-17:

Exhibition «History of Vilnius cinemas»; National Gallery of Art, Konstitucijos g. 22, Vilnius;

The exhibition presents history of Vilnius cinemas from the first public performances in the end of the 19th century to the present days. It is made of showpieces, documents, video and audio refccords kept in personal, public archives and museums.

January 11-17:

Exhibition «Invitation to Ball. 1915-2015»; Museum of Applied Art, Arsenalo g. 3A, Vilnius;

The exhibition shows 100 best evening dresses from Alexander Vasiljev collection.

January 11-17:

Exhibition «Shalom, Israel! The Paths of Litvak Artists»; Tolerance Centre, Naugarduko g. 10/2, Vilnius;

The exhibition presents 24 Litvak artists and 37 pieces of art that unveil the two-way development of Jewish art. It illustrates the influence Litvak art had on the art of Israel and the way nature and traditional folk art in Israel changed the artistic expression of Litvak artists. Visitors will have the possibility to admire the works of Marc Chagall, Max Band, Boris Schatz, Emmanuel Mane-Katz, Pinchus Abramovitch and the other artists.

January 11-17:

Artist Sofija Rickevičiūtė‘s exhibition «Vasaros vėjai»; A. Žmuidzinavičius‘Artworks and Collection Museum/Velnių Museum, V. Putvinskio g. 64, Kaunas;

As a big lover of nature, the promising artist‘s paintings are all about the motifs of nature she discovered in the summer of 2015; artists is balancing between expressive and minimalistic forms of expression;

January 11-17, 10 am -6pm (closed on Saturdays and Sundays):

Exhibition of Italian artwork; Gallery «Aukso pjūvis», K. Donelaičio g. 62, Kaunas;

Thirteen renown Italian artists show their best design and applied art works; among the artists are Andy, Ornella Bernardi, Martina Maffioli, Tiziana Bologni, Silvano Costanzo, Stefano Fontana, Valentina ir Camilla Gallo, Massimo Ghiotti, Gianmaria Potenza, Andrea, Massimo Savio and Concetta Zangari;

January 14, 6pm:

Concert «Among continents»; Klaipėdos Koncertų Salė; Šiaulių g. 36, Klaipėda;

Violinist Rūta Lipinaitytė and Kaunas‘ Vytautas Magnum University‘s Cameral Orchestra is inviting one to set out through the tunes of music on an inter-continental musical journey…

January 15, 5 pm:

Photography exhibition «Sochi Project: Caucasian Tourism and War Atlas»; M. Žilinskas Art Gallery, Nepriklausomybės a. 12, Kaunas;

The exhibition wraps up five years’ work by Dutch photographer Rob Hornstra and publicist Arnold van Bruggen, who have spent five years in the Caucasus shooting the life and collecting photographs, maps and other documentary materials; the exhibition reveals the history of Sochi and its vicinities, as well as showcases the transformation of the region while preparing for the Sochi Olympic Games;

January 15, 6.30 pm:

Theatric Programme «Krantas»; Klaipėda State Musical Theatre, Danės g. 19, Klaipėda;

The theatric programme is devoted to mark the anniversary of attachment of Klaipėda land to Lithuania in 1924;

January 16, 8am- noon:

Vilnius Collectors Club; Tauras Hill, Vinco Mykolaičio Putino g. 5,Vilnius;

One will be able to find various coins, banknotes, stamps, postcards, vintage dinnerware, furniture, medals, awards, military insignia, silverware, porcelain, household appliances, watches, musical records, paintings, artwork, tools, utensils, etc.

January 16, 6.30 pm:

Performance «The Master and Margarita»; Lithuanian National Drama Theatre, Gedimino a. 4, Vilnius;

The performance is based on the novel «The Master and Margarita» by Mikhail Bulgakov (1891–1940) written in 1929- 1940, though the text uncorrupted by censorship was first published as late as 1967 in Paris.
