About three fourths (74%) of Latvian residents mentioned high wages as the main criterion of a good job – other factors are less important. Another popular criterion – «interesting work» – has got only 48% of answers, while others are considered to be even less important.

Good management of a company or institution (4%) and good image of the job, reputation in the society (6%) were mentioned as the least important criteria of a good job.  Also a good direct management and opportunity to learn and acquire new skills are important to less then one fifth of respondents, according to the DNB Latvian barometer.

Higher wages is the most important criterion when choosing among several job offers. It is important for 79% of respondents. Another important criterion is social guarantees which was mentioned by 38% respondents. Meanwhile, such criteria as location, good and flexible work conditions, have got similar results – 27% and 26% respectively.

Wages prevail also in answers to the question which job offer would respondents accept if they had to choose – qualified job for lower wages or unqualified job for higher wages. 61% of respondents said they would choose unqualified job for higher wages, while only 24% of respondents would choose the other opportunity.

The average amount per family member which was mentioned as necessary was 346 lats. What is interesting, 8% of respondents could live on 150 lats per family member, but a similar number – 10% of respondents – said they needed more than 500 lats per family member.

Analyzing current opportunities to find a new job, more than a half of respondents said the most effective way is to ask friends and relatives. A considerably lower number (14%) of respondents said it was effective to follow job advertisements in newspapers and internet. Employment agencies was mentioned as the most inefficient way to find a job (3%).
