Syria's President Bashar al-Assad

Syria is in “a state of war”, its President Bashar al-Assad says more than a year after the uprising against his rule began.

In his address to the new cabinet, Assad said that all efforts had to be directed towards winning the war.

“We live in a real state of war from all angles,” he told members of the cabinet who were sworn in on Tuesday, June 26.

He also criticised countries that have been calling for him to step down, stressing that the West “takes and never gives and this has been proven at every stage”.

According to him, Syria wants good relations with all countries but they must know where their interests lie, reports BBC.

As reported, tension in Syria grew after a Turkish fighter plane was shot down by Syria’s air defence force. Turkey’s Foreign Affairs Minister Ahmet Davutoglu claims this happened in international airspace.

He says the unarmed plane was not on any secret mission related to Syria, but accidentally ended up in Syrian airspace before the incident.
