Baltic news, News from Latvia, BNN.LV, BNN-NEWS.COM, BNN-NEWS.RUMore than one-third of Latvian residents aged 15-64 are smokers, which is the fourth largest number of smokers in Europe.

On average, Latvian smokers smoke more than half of one cigarette pack (13.1 cigarettes) per day, according to data compiled by Disease Prevention Centre.

40% of all smokers try to stop smoking at least once every year, but only a small number of them actually succeed.

According to BENU pharmacy specialist Vitaly Mitrohin, nicotine causes one of the quickest and strongest addictions: addiction to nicotine appears after several cigarettes. Symptoms that are usual when a person is trying to drop smoking include fatigue, nervousness, increased irritability and difficulty to concentrate, sleep disturbances, headache, and increased appetite or weight gain.

Although these symptoms can be rather strong at first, physical addiction declines in time. Psychological addiction forces the return to smoking. This is why dropping such a habit should be carefully considered prior to taking any important steps.

According to the pharmacist, smokers who wish to stop smoking can apply for pharmacological treatment. The majority of measures used to treat smoking addiction goes to nicotine replacement treatment. According to clinical research, nicotine replacement treatment is useful, because this helps smokers refrain from smoking and combat smoking habits. Latvian pharmacies also offer different medicine to replace nicotine for smokers, including chewing gums and transdermal patches.

One of the most popular nicotine replacements is chewing gum. A two-milligram chewing gum contains 1.4 milligrams of nicotine. The amount that is received from it depends on the time spent chewing it.

Dermal patches contain pharmaceutical nicotine, which is absorbed in the body through skin. Nicotine is absorbed over the course of 16 hours. Unlike chewing gum, smokers must not smoke when using dermal patches.

Use of active cytosine tablets can also help drop smoking for good. This kind of medicine is only available with prescription. Cytosine works similarly to nicotine, and can help gradually stop smoking altogether and avoid the development of abstinence. This medicine is usually used for 25 days. Smokers are required to stop smoking altogether on the fifth day after starting treatment. On top of that, the patient must not be allowed to smoke a single cigarette during the entire course of treatment.

Upon stopping smoking altogether, patients will likely experience wet cough, which means gradual cleaning of the person’s lungs. This process can be made quicker by using expectorant medicine.

«Because most patients experience stress and anxiety when trying to stop smoking, it is a good idea to use mild sedatives. Physical activity is the best way to relieve stress. It is also helps with breathing. Willpower is no less important than all other factors,» – reminds the pharmacist.
