Baltic news, News from Latvia, BNN.LV, BNN-NEWS.COM, BNN-NEWS.RULatvian residents are some of the most active Internet users in Europe, taking 9th place among 28 EU member states, according to the latest European Union’s Digital Economy and Society Index.

Latvia’s position has not changed over the course of the past twelve months. Denmark ranks the first on this list. Estonia and Lithuania are on the 5th and 10th place, respectively.

The latest data reveals that the number of residents in Latvia who use the Internet to look up news has increased. In this regard, Latvia exceeds the average index In Europe.

Internet habits of residents have changes as well – social networks and online shopping has become more popular in Latvia, as reported by Lattelecom.

Data on electronic communication infrastructure has improved as well in comparison with the previous year. The data reveals that the number of households that have access to high-speed broadband Internet has already reached 91% across the country. Fixed broadband Internet connection is available to 65% of households in Latvia. This can be explained with the wide range of offers available to consumers in Latvia: Lattelecom offers optical Internet with a speed of up to 1 Gbit/sec to nearly 500,000 clients. Modernized cable Internet with a speed of up to 60 Mbit/sec is already available to 180,000 households.

«Although we to use the Internet more often, results of the survey show that residents of other countries use advantages provided by Internet infrastructure more actively than we do. We cannot afford to fall behind. This is why it is highly important to continue educating residents about the advantages provided by the digital environment. The tendency in the use of the Internet in state administration is definitely positive – the survey shows that Latvia has increased the availability of e-services in the county over the course of the past 12 months,» – says Lattelecom Chairman Juris Gulbis.
