BNN offers you a selection of cultural events in Lithuania for the week between October 26 and November 1.
October 26-30:
Contemporary Music Festival «Gaida»; Vilnius concert halls
The festival held in Vilnius since 1991 is about to wrap up the most prominent festival of contemporary music in Lithuania this year. This is one of the most important new musical events in Central and Eastern Europe. During the last ten years the festival has become a prestigious event not only for Lithuanian music lovers, but also for the large international audience that attends the festival each year. The festival’s aim is to present the most interesting Lithuanian and world music oeuvre, to initiate new projects including top international musicians and to keep the highest quality criteria as the priority.
October 26, 7pm:
Play «Run Beatrice, Run»; VU Theatre Hall, Universiteto g. 3, Vilnius;
The play is about Beatrice – a naïve girl, who thinks that she can save and change the present materialistic and cynical world. She is like a spirit sent from the above. Spirits, such as Beatrice, do not exist anymore. Therefore this play is extremely relevant because we need this Beatrice to exist. The main characters’ lives are set according to Someone’s plan. That Someone is not a real security agent. It is the satanic monster in each of us in our own sub-consciousness. These monsters are like viruses, that we are infected with. Yet Beatrice is capable to resist this infection of her inner evil… Director- Rimantas Venckus, cosumers designer – Dalia Kiaupaitė, choreography: Kamile Narkutė;
October 26, 8pm:
Jazz Duo: Olesia Jalunina and Alexey Degoosarov; Pavilion, Pylimo g. 21B, Vilnius;
When this couple appears on stage, they say they seem to be good and free together, when totally immersed in the music they play they lavishly share love born at the time of playing musical works with the public. The musicians do not limit themselves to one style of performance: instrumental themes by Bill Evans and Joe Henderson, songs by Queen and Sting sound are spontaneous and attentive to details and sounds;
October 28, 7pm:
Georgia’s song and dance troupe «Salkhino»; Congress Hall, Vilniaus g. 6/16, Vilnius;
Georgia is famous for its magical flavours, exceptional landscapes and sincere people. Despite various periods of wars and occupation, the country was able to preserve the unique culture and traditions that were passed down from generation to generation. Another Georgian asset is polyphonic music; in 2001, it was recognized as «the masterpiece of the world’s intangible cultural heritage» by Commission for UNESCO. It is precisely this masterpiece group «Salkhino» brings to Vilnius in their hearts and lips. The group enthralled the listeners by the unique harmony, matured by the flow of time, human stories and fantastic landscapes.
October 26-November 1:
10th International «Kaunas biennale -United»; Kaunas Central Post Office, Laisvės g. 102, Kaunas;
This year’s largest contemporary art project «Kaunas bienalė» takes place in Kaunas, the second-largest Lithuanian city. Over 80 artists from over 30 countries represent their works encompassing the spirits of Vilnius, Paris, Rio and New York.
October 26- November 1:
Exhibition «Escaped child of the Lithuanian Jews tells about Shoa»; Tuskulėnai peace park memorial complex conference hall, Žirmūnų g. 1F, Vilnius;
Mobile exhibition «Escaped child of the Lithuanian Jews tells about Shoa» prepared by Vilna Gaon Jewish State museum. The exhibition is held in Conference hall of Tuskulėnai Peace park Memorial Complex. Exceptional, authentic stories of the rescued in Holocaust children of the Lithuanian Jews illustrated by rare old photos are presented in the exhibition. The exhibition reveals the sense of responsibility and humanity, self-sacrifice – characteristics which except rescuers of the Jews – every participant of the exhibition talks about this.
October 26-31:
Exhibition Salvador Dali&Pablo Picasso; gallery «Arka», Aušros Vartų g. 7, Vilnius;
In the «Arka» gallery, an extraordinary exhibition continues inviting one to see an exposition of the worldwide famous legendary Spanish artists Salvador Dali and Pablo Picasso, introducing over 150 original sculpture, ceramics and graphic art works. It will be possible to see in the gallery not only the most important plots by Salvador Dali – melting clocks, an elephant on thin legs, a woman composed of boxes, a giraffe on fire, etc. In this exhibition one will also discover «another» Dali whose cultural and graphic images will astound you no less – winged snails, flies with crowns, and 17 sea-urchins on the rhinoceros back! Ceramics by Pablo Picasso will enable the spectator to delve into the depths of the artist’s creative aspirations…
October 29, 7pm:
Andrius Mamontovas concert «Burning Eyes»; Švitrigailos g. 29, Vilnius;
Legendary contemporary Lithuanian artist is on his tour presenting his classic and newest songs;
October 26- November 1:
Three centuries of fashion; museum of Applied Art, Arsenalo g. 3A, Vilnius;
The display one will enjoy in the museum will take one through 19th century necessary ladies’ accessories,
Napoleonic army’s apparel and a lot more…
October 30, 7pm:
Concert dedicated for Day of Dead Remembrance; Kaunas Cathedral Basilica, Vilnius g. 1, Kaunas;
Kaunas City symphonic orchestra plays; conductor Constantine Orbelian;
October 31, 10 pm:
Grand Halloween Carnival; Exhibition and Convention Centre «Litexpo», Laisvės g. 5, Vilnius;
That night the gates, dividing this and the other world, are going to get opened with a bang in the biggest event of electronic music in Lithuania, Grand Halloween Carnival, which is going to make humble even the mightiest ones from the world of the dead.
October 31, noon:
Concert for children «Bugaboos»; Congress Hall, Vilniaus g. 6/16, Vilnius;
In a programme musical works of E. Grieg, M. Mussorgsky, R. Wagner, C. Saint Seans, P. Tchaikovsky, I. Stravinsky will be played;
November 1, noon:
Flea Market; Dance Bar, Šermukšnių g. 4A, Vilnius;
Flea market is a place trading in personal used things: clothes, accessories, household utilities, interior details, toys, books and many others. Also here one can find unique handmade articles. The traders of the flea market usually do not seek profit and the visitors come to watch the things and to communicate, to have a great time and to acquire original items.
