BNN offers you a selection of cultural events in Lithuania for the week between October 12 and October 18.

October 12-18:

Exhibition «Salvador Dali & Pablo Picasso»; gallery «Arka», Aušros Vartų st. 7, Vilnius;

In the «Arka» gallery, an extraordinary exhibition is opened – an exposition of the worldwide famous legendary Spanish artists Salvador Dali and Pablo Picasso introducing over 150 original sculpture, ceramics and graphic art works. It will be possible to see in the gallery not only the most important plots by Salvador Dali – melting clocks, an elephant on thin legs, a woman composed of boxes, a giraffe on fire, etc. In this exhibition one will also discover «another» Dali whose cultural and graphic images will astound you no less – winged snails, flies with crowns, and 17 sea-urchins on the rhinoceros back! Ceramics by Pablo Picasso will enable the spectator to delve into the depths of the artist’s creative aspirations…

October 13, 7pm:

Concert by «Terry Riley»; Congress Hall, Vilniaus st. 6/16, Vilnius;

It is said there are just a few personalities in the world that can be proud of the changes they made in the history of music. Terry Riley, the famous American composer that is considered to be a living music legend, is one of those personalities. Continuing the series of The Concert of the Year, Vilnius Festivals invites to the exclusive concert of this creator, the pioneer and inspirer of minimalist music, which will be held in Vilnius on October 13. It will be the only concert of this legend of American music not only in the Baltic countries but also throughout Central and Eastern Europe.

October 14-18:

International Festival «Vilnius Jazz»; Lithuanian Russian Drama Theatre, J. Basanavičiaus st. 13, Vilnius;

Founded in 1987, «Vilnius Jazz» is the oldest annual jazz festival held in Vilnius. It is an exceptional event in Lithuania that provides a broad perspective on contemporary trends in jazz from all over the world. Over the years «Vilnius Jazz» has earned a reputation as a radical avant-garde festival oriented towards novelty and limit-stretching creativity. Attracting an audience of around 5000 each year, «Vilnius Jazz» has played a formative role for several generations of jazz fans. It has also to its credit helped develop local players who have then moved onto performing in other European venues and international jazz groups. The festival is also inextricably linked with the development of a distinctive «Vilnius jazz» school. Recognised as one of the most important signposts in Eastern Europe, the festival remains devoted to nurturing and promoting the living tradition of improvised music in Lithuania. In 2005, it joined the membership of the Europe Jazz Network.

October 14, 6pm:

Monika Lingytė’s Concert; Saulė Concert Hall 140, Šiauliai;

Still awe-stricken from the blasting success of the hit «Under the sky» has seen (over 3 million Youtube downloads), the aspiring artist is inviting one to the release of her new album «Walk with me.»This time it will take place in Šiauliai, the fourth-largest Lithuanian city.

October 15-18:

Festival «Inconvenient Films»; Vilnius cinema theatres;

Human Rights Documentary Film Festival «Inconvenient Films» is an annual documentary film festival established in 2007. The mission of this non-profit initiative is to raise awareness on human rights issues around the world and to connect them to those that are present in Lithuania. By presenting various documentaries on main human rights topics, inviting filmmakers and activists from all over the world, organizers hope to encourage public debates on human rights issues and ways to solve them. Despite project’s social mission and non-commercial character, the festival is considered to be one of the most popular and most visited film festivals in Lithuania. More then 60 000 viewers visited festival’s educational screenings since its foundation. Festival organizers are aiming to broaden its audience’s and draw attention to social challenges, global and local human rights issues. It is a space for free thought, sincere discussions about subjects which really matter.

October 15, 11pm:

«Students’s Night with Donatas Montvydas»; Kiwi Club-Fabrik, J. Janonio g. 27, Klaipėda;

One of the hottest, literally and figuratively, Lithuanian performers, Donatas Montvydas, is inviting all to the sole concert in the Lithuanian seaport of Klaipėda;

October 16, 7pm:

«Autumn in Paris»; St. Catherine‘s Church, Vilniaus g. 30, Vilnius;

A charming tandem of soloists, magic of French music, and fervour of performance- these are the keywords of this concert. The violinist Simona Venslovaitė and the pianist Veronika Kopjova are ready to take you, at least for a moment, to the romantic Paris on the streets whereof the composer E. Chausson walked by…

October 17, 7pm:

«From Treasury of the Orchestra»; Lithuanian National Philharmonic, Aušros Vartų g. 5, Vilnius;

The Lithuanian National Symphony Orchestra carries on with a nice tradition of inviting music connoisseurs to indulge in music from Treasury of the Orchestra. Tonight’s programme features works by Beethoven, a Viennese classicist, and Martinů, one of the foremost Czech composers of the 20th century. Projecting the atmosphere of the beginning of the 19th century Beethoven’s music masterfully combines the lucid sonority characteristic of works by Mozart and Haydn, classicist virtuosity and lyrical romanticist aesthetics. Led by Juozas Domarkas, the honorary conductor of the LNSO, the Orchestra shares the stage with Guoda Gedvilaitė, a Lithuanian pianist residing in Germany.

October 17, 7pm:

Concert by legendary Džordana Butkutė «I am the queen»; Žalgiris Arena; Karaliaus Mindaugo 50, Kaunas;

Džordana Butkutė, a legendary Lithuanian solo singer, is about to throw an one-of-the-kind concert «I am the queen» in the largest Lithuanian arena, Kaunas Žalgiris Arena.

October 18, noon:

Concert «Orchestra and young Talents on Stage»; Lithuanian National Philharmonic, Aušros Vartų g. 5, Vilnius;

It is a wonderful tradition carried on for many years: the masters – everywhere applauded Lithuanian Chamber Orchestra and conductor Modestas Barkauskas – share the big stage with young talents. Today the young performers make their first steps on the concert scene, but before long will be representing Lithuania in the world like their older colleagues.

Number of foreign travellers in Latvia up 53.2% in past seven years

In 2017, foreign travellers crossed the border of Latvia 7.7 million times, which is 13.7 % more than a year before. Last year, foreign travellers in Latvia spent EUR 691.9 million – EUR 46.7 million or 7.2 % more than in 2016.

Experts shocked about HIV patients’ reluctance to undergo treatment

The number of HIV patients that underwent treatment in Q1 2018 did not change in Latvia even though a considerable amount of funding was allocated from the state budget for HIV/AIDS treatment in 2018. This creates concerns about HIV patients’ use of healthcare services, according to Association HIV.LV.

Danske Bank to gradually cease servicing Baltic clients

In Baltic States, Danske Bank plans to focus solely on providing support to subsidiaries of Nordic clients, as well as global corporations with a considerable business portion in Nordic countries. Latvian Saeima establishes ban for banks to service shell companies

Banks registered in Latvia will no longer be allowed to work with shell companies and service their accounts. This is provided by amendments to the Law on the Prevention of Money Laundering and Terrorism Financing approved by the Saeima on Thursday, 26 April, as confirmed by the parliament’s press-service.
