August 17, 6.30 pm

Bubble the city; Lukiškių Square, Vilnius;

Burbuliatorius (Bubble your city) is an annual and periodic open source urban event, which takes place in different world cities at the same day, every second Monday, at 6.30pm (local time) in summer. The aim of the event is to revitalize deactivated public spaces and to encourage citizens to explore the potential of public spaces by developing non-commercial scenarios of their use and sharing the local experience with other cities. All one need is to bring soap bubbles to the announced place in your city and to bubble it..

August 17-23:

Three centuries of fashion; Museum of Applied Art, Arsenalo st. 3A, Vilnius;

The King of France Louis XIV quipped that fashion was a «mirror of history.» This description of fashion as a unique social and artistic expression has not aged in over three centuries. Through his new exhibition spanning the period from the 1740s to 1960s, Alexandre Vassiliev attempts to answer the question, what drives men and women to constantly change their attire and accessories throughout history?..

New exhibition of the fashion historian Alexandre Vassilliev «Rebel in Boudoir» is dedicated to fashion of the eighth decade of the XX century. This short period of time in terms of style was motley, eclectic and contradictory. The connoisseurs compared it with bubbling boiler of creative thought, peculiar testing polygon of the future fashion. In the eighth decade, it was fought for the rights to expression; however, the uniting fashion concept was missing. It is the time of revolutionary stylish changes in art and fashion: the hippy epoch was changed by folk style; later on, retro and military style spread, together with disco, glam rock and punk styles.

August 17-23:

Contemporary Lithuanian Stained Glass Exhibition; Vitražo Manufaktūra, Stiklių st. 6, Vilnius;

Stained glass – a mysterious, old art, often associated with majestic medieval cathedrals and churches or monumental artworks seen in public spaces such as theaters and concert halls. «Vitražo Manufaktūra» – a specialized glass gallery located in Vilnius old town – invites one to take a fresh look on stained glass and its‘ visual expression. The gallery is holding a contemporary Lithuanian glass art exhibition dedicated to celebrate the 140th anniversary of birth of the legendary Lithuanian artist Mykalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis. The exhibition, which is taking place in authentic cellars of 16th century represents the most celebrated contemporary Lithuanian stained glass artists such as Konstantinas Šatūnas, Ieva Paltanavičiūtė, Nerijus Baublys, Rasa Grybaitė and others.

August 20, 7-10pm

«Flashes of lights. Warm Evenings»; K. Sirvydas Square, Vilnius;

Already for four years, apart from regular dance classes, the self-medication studio Souls organize a communication dance parties known as «Flashes of Light. Warm evenings» in which everyone may learn a little how to move – the party also offer cosy, up to an-hour-long educational classes in different dances.

August 21, 7pm

Ornaments of Shanghai, St. Catherine‘s Church, Vilniaus st. 30, Vilnius;

For the first time in Lithuania, the duo of dancer Ania Losinger and composer, percussionist Mats Eser will transport you to the city that never sleeps or rests, the «Dragon City» – Shanghai. The dancer’s expressive body language and acrobatic hand movements convey the city’s soul, while the rhythms of the percussion instruments set the pace to which one of the world’s largest cities lives…

August 20-23:

Vilnius LGBT Festival «Kreivės» (Curves); various Vilnius venues;

Vilnius LGBT festival «Kreivės» is a cultural and social initiative which started in 2014. It is neither the first nor the only LGBT festival in the region or Lithuania. Nonetheless, building on earlier and cooperating with current queer initiatives by others, it aspires to be a unique space for film screenings, events and community building. The vision of the festival is to build a community which acknowledges and passionately supports variety in LGBT expressions and viewpoints. The festival organizers say they are committed to bringing stories that spring from diverse lives and transform our vision of who we are and who we can be. Programme includes LGBT cinema, workshops, discussions, queer poetry readings, etc.

August 17-23:

«The World According to Fluxus»; National Gallery of Art, Konstitucijos ave. 22, Vilnius;

Exhibition «The World According to Fluxus » showcases more than 600 items selected by curator Liutauras Pšibilskis and is the first comprehensive presentation of the Vilnius Fluxus Collection to a Lithuanian audience. It will allow viewers to become acquainted with these treasures of the Fluxus movement that were acquired by the City of Vilnius in 2007 and are part of the permanent collection of the Jonas Mekas Visual Arts Center. The collection was assembled by legendary avant-garde filmmaker, artist, critic and curator Jonas Mekas who was a close friend of George Maciunas (Jurgis Mačiūnas). Mekas is the founder and long-time artistic director of Anthology Film Archives in New York and the recipient of numerous international awards including the Lithuanian National Prize for Culture and the Arts.

August 18, 20 and 22, 11 am

Vilnius Walking Tours in German; Cathedral Belfry, Cathedral Square;

The tour stretches from the majestic Gediminas’ Tower, which has been glorified in many legends, to a spectacular view of the Old Town with the stops at the Gates of Dawn and its painting of Mother of God, Vilnius University, The President’s Office, Lower Castle, the residence of the Grand Dukes and other great cultural values.

Vilnius Panoramic Tour; meeting point at Town Hall, Didžioji st. 3, Vilnius;

Vilnius Old Town is surrounded by many hills, which almost every has its own ancient name. This tour covers panoramas from different places around Old town and a visit to the bohemian Vilnius district – the Republic of Užupis, which has its own President and Sherriff. The stops include Vilnius Town Hall square, St. Casimirus street and panorama, Bastion of Vilnius city wall with panorama, Park of ponds, The Constitution of Independent Republic of Užupis, Užupis Art incubator, Square of Tibet, Church of Bartholomew, Panorama from Bekešas Hill and St. Ann‘s Church;

August 22, 8am – noon:

Vilnius Collectors Club; Tauras Hill, Vinco Mykolaičio Putino St. 5, Vilnius;

On the Tauras Hill, where the antique lovers’ gathering takes place, one you will be able to find various coins, banknotes, stamps, postcards, vintage dinnerware, furniture, medals, awards, military insignia, silverware, porcelain, household appliances, watches, musical records, paintings, artwork, tools, utensils, etc. The club regularly attracts foreign guests who also bring their collections, change and trade them.

August 22, 7pm

International Grill; Downtown Forest Hostel and Camping, Paupio st. 31A, Vilnius;

The grill has a mission to familiarise foreigners with Vilnius residents and Vilnius residents with guests. Firewood is ours, roast is yours, no taxes – everyone roasts on the same heap of coal, everyone drinks what he buys from the bar, and everybody talks whatever he/she wants. One is awaited there on Saturday evenings!

August 22-23:

The days of ancient crafts; Trakai Island Castle, Kęstučio st. 4, Trakai

The traditional Craft Festival is organised since 2005. The month of August was chosen not accidentally – it was August 23, 1495 when the Grad Duke of Lithuania Alexander approved the statute in the Trakai Island Castle and granted a privilege to Vilnius Goldsmith Guild, the first one in Lithuania. The Days of Ancient Crafts developed from the Medieval Festival held annually in the Trakai Peninsula Castle. The event starts with an ancient cannon shot. The old castle comes back to life – there are a lot of activities going on in the great courtyard – blacksmith blows bellows, potters make jars, goldsmiths have their silver jewellery and copper decorations exposed on stalls. Broth bubbles in old copper pots on fire, antique kitchen utensils and bowls are all over the place creating unique atmosphere. During the event, presentations of crafts, weaponry and arts of the 14th to 16th centuries are held.

August 23

Traditional International Bicycles «Velomarathon 2015»; the Old Town, Vilnius;

The city of Vilnius will host the cycling competition «Velomarathon» for the 6 year in a row. In 2010, acclaimed as the «The year sports event» in Lithuania, «Velomarathon» seeks to consolidate four core values in the Lithuanian cycling culture: family, health, road safety and the environment. «We want to create a spectacular feast to the cycling enthusiasts. The event is more than a sports event, it is also a platform for current social issues and an attraction centre of the positive and socially active people,» says the organizer, National Automobile Club Director Benediktas Vanagas. The race will be divided into three groups: for children, amateurs, and professionals.

August 20-23:

Festival «Saulėtosios Naktys» (Sunny Nights 2015); Joniškio district;

The organizers call the festival «an ecologic and non-commercial festival” which puts together artists, musicians and «other good people.» The get-together will include different workshops, concerts, sport competitions and creative project implementation, not, on-site, installations and, certainly, tons of good, visceral chats and talks;

Latvian residents’ opinion of government’s work remains negative

Latvian residents voiced the biggest degree of dissatisfaction about the development of the situation in Latvia and the work performed by the government. Although the previous evaluation of government’s work had increased by four points, it has since declined by two points, according to data from Baltic International Bank’s Latvian Barometer.

Eel fishing to be restricted in Baltic Sea for three months

European Union Fisheries Council has decided to restrict eel fishing for three months in 2018 in all waters, including the Baltic Sea. Although the World Wide Fund for Nature and environmental organization in Europe view it as a notable first step, these efforts are unlikely to have a major impact on the most important problem – eel population continues declining rapidly, as noted by WWF.

LCCI: increase of electricity bills for thousands of companies in unacceptable

Latvian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI) categorically opposes increasing electricity bills for the majority of small and medium-sized companies due to mandatory procurement component’s differentiation. The organization believes that this would basically introduce a new additional tax, making them even less competitive.
