BNN offers you a selection of cultural events in Lithuania for the week during November 30 to December 6.

December 1, 6pm:

Traditional Japanese Dance Presentation&Demonstration; Mykolas Romeris University, Ateities g. 20, Vilnius;

MRU Asian centre and Embassy of Japan in Lithuania kindly invites everyone to a demonstration and dance performance by Mr Takamasa Fujima, distinguished Japanese traditional dancer. Information about Takamasa Fujima: He is a Japanese traditional dancer born in Tokyo in 1971. After graduating from the playwriting course of Nihon University College of Art, he has continued to create new types of Japanese traditional dance that relate to farce. He has participated in commercial theatrical performances since 2003. He has also been in charge of choreography in a variety of plays and dramas on TV.

November 29- December 6:

Christmas in the capital city Vilnius; various Vilnius venues;

Christmas miracle has come to Vilnius to chase anxious thoughts off and to bring festive mood and eagerness to share this feeling with the closest ones. Christmas in the capital city is a whole garland of the events for the whole family, as Christmas is the most beautiful annual celebration, awaited both by little ones and gown-ups!

Throughout the festive season, Vilnius Cathedral Square will play host to a truly magical Christmas village – one is welcome here to buy a unique gift, treat yourself to a delicious festive treat or warming drink, or even meet a character from your favourite fairy tale.

December 2, 6.30pm:

Lithuania’s fashion king Juozas Statkevičius show; «Siemens» Arena, Ozo g. 14, Vilnius;

Lithuanian fashion’s unrivalled champion Juozas Statkevičius invites one to his year-wrapping fashion show which will highlight the newest high-fashion trends and a lot more;

December 1-6:

Vytenis Jankūnas. Exhibition «Stuck on the train»; Contemporary Art Centre (CAC), Vokiečių g. 2, Vilnius;

The exhibition features a series of photographs taken by the artist while travelling in New York on subway between Queens and Manhattan. Vytenis Jankūnas (b. 1961) is a Lithuanian artist who has been living in New York for the past 20 years. He graduated from Lithuanian State Art Institute in 1985 and was an active member of the Lithuanian art scene throughout the 1990s, a member of artists’ groups «1» and «School of New Communication». He is exhibiting his work in United States, Lithuania, Germany, Sweden, Finland, Hong Kong, France, United Kingdom and other places. His works are also a part of collections of Lithuanian Art Museum and National M.K. Čiurlionis Art Museum.

December 3-6:

Fair of applied art «CraftVilnius»; Exhibition and Convention Centre «Litexpo», Laisvės g. 5, Vilnius;

The exposition of the applied art dedicated to all those fond of the objects and the world of art. The visitors will be able to purchase unique handmade creations of modern textile, ceramics, fashion design as well as objects made of paper, metal, glass and leather.

Both authentic art works as well as conceptual objects will be presented as if a catalogue of unexpected ideas. The most important thing about this fair is an original and unusual combination of craft, design and art. In the exhibition you will see the newest works of the applied art created by combining the traditional textile, ceramic, metal, glass and leather processing techniques with modern technologies.

The visitors of the fair will have an opportunity to meet distinguished professional artists. Both the world celebrities as well as the young debuting artists from Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Finland and Sweden will share different experiences and reveal the technological secrets.

December 3-6:

International Women Film Festival «Šeršėliafam» ; cinema theatre «Pasaka» ; Šv. Ignotas g. 4/3. Vilnius;

9th International Women Film Festival «Šeršėliafam» 2015 will take place in Vilnius and other Lithuanian cities. Films created by women directors and films about women this year will be shown on 3-13 December in the cinema theater «Pasaka» in Vilnius. The name of the festival comes from renowned French saying – «cherchez la femme».

December 3, 7pm:

«Lithuanian Trio» ; The Palace of the Grand Dukes of Lithuania, Katedros 3, Vilnius;

«Lithuanian trio» is a unique musical project which united the brightest people of the Lithuanian music. Violinist Vilhelmas Čepinskis, violoncellist Vytautas Sondeckis and pianist Petras Geniušas united by love to music and Lithuania decided to restore the ensemble with the same name that performed concerts more than a decade ago.

December 4, 6pm:

Christopher Christmas; St. Catherine‘s Church, Vilniaus g. 30, Vilnius;

In amongst all the things to do before Christmas, Christopher’s Christmas concerts will be that moment, or a snow angel that will brighten up one’s Christmas celebrations with the most uplifting emotions..

November 29-December 6:

10th International «Kaunas biennale -United»; Kaunas Central Post Office, Laisvės g. 102, Kaunas;

This year’s largest contemporary art project «Kaunas bienalė» takes place in Kaunas, the second-largest Lithuanian city. Over 80 artists from over 30 countries represent their works encompassing the spirits of Vilnius, Paris, Rio and New York.

December 5- 6:

Trakai is capital of Santa Clauses; Trakai;

Here’s a holiday season and Christmas is just around the corner. So time for gifts, candies, and of course Santa Claus! Travel in Trakai Christmas Town to meet funny characters and dance along with new songs that you are certain to fall in love with! You won’t want to miss the live entertainment from Santa and his Elves, Christmas tree and lights, Christmas ice skating or surprise your friends at home by greeting for them from Christmas post office and much, much more throughout winter.

December 5, noon:

Uptown Market; Radio Lofts, Kauno g. 28, Vilnius;

During this fair the most talented Lithuanian designers, craftsmen, the architects of style and other beautiful things are going to be packed for your impressive suitcase of the things and impressions for the summer season.

December 5, 7pm:

«Creation of the world» ; Lithuanian National Philharmonic, Ausros vartu g. 5, Vilnius;

To mark the 140th birth anniversary of composer Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis, performers Lithuanian National Symphony Orchestra, soloist Ingrida Armonaite and conductor Modestas Pitrenas will be playing the programme consisting of tragic overture by composer Andrzej Panufnik, concerto for violing and orchestra by Igor Stravinsky and poem «Creation of the world»  by Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis.

This year, Lithuania celebrates the composer Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis’ 140th birth anniversary. On this occasion the Lithuanian National Symphony Orchestra and maestro Modestas Pitrėnas introduce Creation of the World, yet unperformed Čiurlionis’ poem. The composer intended it to be his musical opus magnum in tandem with Creation of the World cycle of paintings. However, Čiurlionis never completed his poem leaving it in the form of piano manuscript.

December 5, 5pm:

Anniversary Concert of VU Song and Dance Ensemble; New Concert Hall, Kernavės g. 84, Vilnius;

Oi ant kalno, ant aukštojo is the second anniversary concert of the ensemble that celebrates its 75th anniversary. This concert shall reveal liveliness of the ensemble related to Vilnius city, Vilnius University and the history of ensemble. During this performance, one will sail through the sea of memories from 1940 till the present days. Travelling through the continuous history, the audience shall be presented with compositions performed for several decades that glorify Vilnius, University and ensemble.

December 6, 4pm:

Advent Music Evenings «Light of the World» , Žvejų rūmai, Taikos g. 70, Klaipėda;

Klaipėda’s women choir «Dangė»  and soloists Erika Ostrenkova and Akvile Januskaite invite one to come to enjoy the best sacral music by the most distinguished composers of the past and modern times.

Latvian residents’ opinion of government’s work remains negative

Latvian residents voiced the biggest degree of dissatisfaction about the development of the situation in Latvia and the work performed by the government. Although the previous evaluation of government’s work had increased by four points, it has since declined by two points, according to data from Baltic International Bank’s Latvian Barometer.

Eel fishing to be restricted in Baltic Sea for three months

European Union Fisheries Council has decided to restrict eel fishing for three months in 2018 in all waters, including the Baltic Sea. Although the World Wide Fund for Nature and environmental organization in Europe view it as a notable first step, these efforts are unlikely to have a major impact on the most important problem – eel population continues declining rapidly, as noted by WWF.

LCCI: increase of electricity bills for thousands of companies in unacceptable

Latvian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI) categorically opposes increasing electricity bills for the majority of small and medium-sized companies due to mandatory procurement component’s differentiation. The organization believes that this would basically introduce a new additional tax, making them even less competitive.
