BNN offers you a selection of cultural and sports events in Lithuania for the week during August 8-14.

August 8-14:

Slovak Cultural Summer in Vilnius (Slovakijos Kultūros Vasara); Vilnius Town Hall (http://www.vilniausrotuse.lt/?lang=en_us), Didžioji g. 31, Vilnius;

On the occasion of the Slovak Presidency of the Council of the European Union, the Embassy of the Slovak Republic in Lithuania presents three exhibitions « Did you know? This is Slovakia» (Ar žinai? Tai yra Slovakia), «Magical Slovakia» (Stebuklinga Slovakia) and «Masters of the Spirit» (Dvasios meistrai) in the Lithuanian capital. The exhibition «Magical Slovakia» showcases works of 30 Slovakian photographers.

August 8-14:

Sharon Yaari exhibition «Positive Images for Field and Forest» («Teigiami Pievos ir Miško vaizdai»); National Gallery of Art (http://www.ndg.lt/en.aspx), Konstitucijos pr. 22, Vilnius;

Contemporary Israeli artist Sharon Yaari presents one of his biggest personal exhibitions in Europe, and his first in Lithuania. Having studied photography in Israel, Great Britain and the USA, Yaari creates large-format images of condensed content. These are photographs that lack the haphazard and spontaneous qualities that are characteristic of documentary photography; on the contrary, most of the images are carefully thought-out and even consciously constructed.

August 9, 7 pm:

Concert «Gospel Evolution» («Evangelijos evoliucija»); St. Catherine‘s Church, Vilniaus g. 30, Vilnius;

Aware that gospel music stands out for its unique sound, rhythm, harmony and for the love, joy and strength, the gospel band comprising Marius Leškauskas (keyboards), Andrius Kairys (drums), Domas Žostautas (bass guitar) and the bright gospel singers radiate eternal love and devotion in the concerts. Programme features E. Hawkins, K. Franklin, J. P. Kee, traditional gospel hymns and spirituals.

August 11, 7 pm:

Concert «With Each Word» («Su kiekvienu žodžiu»); Vaidila Theater, A. Jakšto g. 9, Vilnius;

Portugal’s most charismatic voice Viviane (vocals, flute) will enthrall one with her outstanding voice and talent.

Her songs are described as small stories into which fit feelings and situations we all know about, all coming out packaged in a unique sound. The programme includes chansons, Latin American rhythms and the longing of fado.

August 12-14:

Kopūstinės (Cabbage Fair); Trakai;

Colourful artisan’s fair is organized on Kopūstinės Island on the occasion of Žolinė Feast (Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary), where concerts will be held and culinary heritage is introduced. Žolinė Feast is a Lithuanian celebration marking end of summer agricultural works, a thanksgiving for all goodies that summer has brought and also a bidding goodbye to herbs and flowers.

August 12, 8 pm:

Poesy and Music Festival «Naktigonės 2016»; Ieva Simonaitytė Library Courtyard, Herkaus Manto g. 25, Klaipėda;

If you are not into the rowdy atmosphere of traditional concerts, then the event, filled with the rhythms of poesy and non-conventional music, is definitely for you.

August 12, 8 pm:

Laima Vaikule’ concert; Palanga Concert Hall, Palanga;

The legendary Latvian singer, Laima Vaikule, invites Palanga resort guests to come to enjoy her colourful programme of old and new songs.

August 12, 6 pm:

«Tytuvėnai Music Festival» («Tytuvėnai Muzikos Festivalis»); Culture Palace Terrace, Nepriklausomybės g. 25, town of Naujoji Akmenė;

Concert «Spanish Passions» («Ispaniškos Aistros») by Klaipėda Musical Theatre Orchestra will kick off the festival with the best Spanish rhythms;

August 14, 5 pm:

Concert «With Love to Barbara Streisand» (Koncertas «Su meile Barbara Streisand»), Pažaislis Monastery, Masiulio g. 31, Kaunas;

As part of the Pažaislis Music Festival, the concert of Evelina Sašenko will attract all fans of Barbara Streisand;   the Lithuanian singer will perform the best songs from the legendary singer’s repertoire.

August 14, 11 pm:

Concert «Žolinės with Martynas Kavaliauskas» (Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary with Martynas Kavaliauskas); Taboo Night Club, Pilies g. 12, Kaunas;

The rising Lithuanian star Martynas Kavaliauskas is set to throw out another great party, combining the traditional worshipping of Blessed Virgin Mary and the best rhythms of modern music.

In Q1 2018 Latvian unemployment rate constituted 8.2 %. Compared to the previous quarter, unemployment rate rose by 0.1 percentage points, while compared to the corresponding quarter of the year before – by 1.2 percentage points.

63.5% of Latvia’s residents were employed in Q1 2018

898.0 thousand people or 63.5 % of Latvia population aged 15–74 were employed in Q1 2018. Over the year, employment rate grew by 1.9 percentage points and number of employed persons by 15.5 thousand.

Cancellation of ‘extended normal’ work time could require up to EUR 10 million

The decision made by the Constitutional Court of Latvia to liquidate «extended normal» work time starting from next year may require up to EUR 10 million, said Prime Minister Māris Kučinskis in an interview to Rīta panorama programme.
