BNN offers you a selection of cultural events in Lithuania for the week between February 8 and 14.

February 9, 6 pm:

Shrovetide (Užgavėnės), courtyard of Vilnius Teachers‘ House, Vilniaus g. 39/6, Vilnius;

Shrovetide carnival is a traditional holiday, one of the merriest events in Lithuania, which escorts winter. From early morning people in costumes begin roaming. In the evening people yell «winter, winter get out of my yard», the «Morė» (a creature made of straw) is burned – the symbol of winter. Then the two men, one fat is called Lašininis and the other, a thin one, known as Kanapinis, will get into a fight… Usually the thin one wins, while the fat one is chased away until Easter. The traditional food of the holiday is pancakes.

February 10, 7 pm:

Alexei Grynyuk: the Magician of Fortepiano, Lithuanian National Philharmonic (http://www.filharmonija.lt/en/home.html), Aušros Vartų g. 5, Vilnius;

After a five-year break, the Lithuanian audience shall have a unique chance to hear solo concerts of the pianist called «Magician of Fortepiano» Alexei Grynyuk, a master in invoking a gamma of human emotions.

February 11, 4 pm:

Vilnius Gastro 2016, various Vilnius venues;

Vilnius Gastro 2016 is a new concept for trying out many Lithuanian capital’s restaurants and tasting sustainable local product dishes in one evening. On this sustainable gastronomic safari one will challenge the taste buds and dive into a world of flavours by the best Vilnius chefs.

February 11, 1.30 pm:

The Commemoration of the Proclamation of Lithuanian Independence; the Vytautas Great War Museum, K. Donelaičio g. 66, Kaunas;

The festivities of one of the import important celebrations in Lithuania’s history – proclamation of Lithuanian Independence on February 16, 1918 – start in Kaunas, which is known for its patriotic proclivity;

February 12, 7 pm:

Concert «Bards among the Stars»; Planetarium, Konstitucijos pr. 12A (www.planetarium.lt), Vilnius;

The concert will feature two Lithuanian performers, Darius Žvirblis, a creator and performer of indie style songs, and Aleksandras Makejevas, a performer of Lithuanian pop rock. The latter has already released six albums.

February 13, 8 pm:

Rūta Ščiogolevaitė Concert, Combo restaurant-club, Raudonvario road 107, Kaunas;

One of the brightest stars of the Lithuanian pop stage, diva Rūta Ščiogolevaitė will certainly send the audience into frenzy;

February 13, 7 pm:

Concert «Karklė White 2016- Hot Chip», Klaipeda Švyturys Arena, Dubysos g. 10, Klaipėda;

The organizers of the hottest summer festival «Karklė» bring the hottest electronic music bands, including UK’s «Hot Chip» and many others;

February 14, 1 pm:

Valentine’s Day Run «Catch Valentine!» («Pagaukite Valentiną»), Nemuno žiedas, settlement of Kačerginė, Kaunas district;

If one feels lonely and believes that hitting the road can ease the feeling of being lonely, then the merry, attraction-full run will definitely cheer up. And moreover: perhaps the other heart, as much lonely and beautiful as yours, might appear gasping for air next to you…

February 14, 4 pm:

Rock Opera «Jūrate ir Kastytis», Kaunas Vytautas Magnus University Hall, Daukanto g. 28, Kaunas;

That the traditional Lithuanian love story can «rock» prove a throng of young Lithuanian stars, including Kostas Smoriginas, Olegas Ditkovkis, Vaidas Baumila and others…
