BNN offers you a selection of cultural and sports events in Lithuania for the week during December 19-25.

December 19-25:

Christmas Tree Alley (Kalėdinių eglių alėja) at the Amazing Vilnius Christmas Tree (Vilniaus Kalėdų eglutė); Cathedral Square (Katedros aikštė), Gedimino pr. 1, Vilnius;

Vilnius Cathedral Square has turned into an all-talk-about Christmas fairytale. At the epicentre is a wonderful Christmas tree that is thought to be one of the year’s nicest Christmas trees worldwide. Vilnius residents and visitors of Vilnius can not only admire it and the Christmas tree alley around it, but also sip mull wine or savour delicious delicacies from the multiple vendor stands circling the Christmas tree.

December 19-25:

Photo Exhibition «The Adamkus Family» by Džoja Gunda Barysaitė (Fotografijos paroda «Adamkų šeima» Džojos Gundos Barysaitės fotografijose); Vilnius Town Hall (Vilniaus Rotušė), Didžioji g. 31, Vilnius;

An exquisite photo collection by former president Valdas Adamkus’ personal photographer reminds the most exciting and historic moments of the great Lithuanian president’s days in the office.

December 20, 6.30 pm:

Ballet «The Nutcracker» (Baletas «Spragtukas»); Lithuanian National Opera and Ballet Theatre (Lietuvos Nacionalinis Operos ir Baleto Teatras) (www.opera.lt/en), A. Vienuolio g. 1, Vilnius;

Ballet in two acts by choreographer Krzysztof Pastor, conductor Martynas Staškus, designer Viačeslav Okunev.

The legendary ballet is full of secrets and miracles, poetry and beauty as well as of wonderful dreams which may come true only on the Christmas Eve…

December 19-25:

Christmas in Trakai (Kalėdos Trakuose); the yard of Trakai Culture Palace (Trakų kultūros centro kiemas), Vytauto g. 69, Trakai;

Trakai, a scenic town 25 kilometres away from Vilnius, has become the capital of Santa Claus with the town being immersed in the marathon of joy and festivities. Santa Clauses and Trakai Dwarf invite one to visit residence of Santa Claus, located in the yard of Trakai Culture Palace.

December 20, 8 pm:

Toto Cutugno Concert (Toto Kutunjo koncertas); «Žalgiris» arena («Žalgirio» arena) (www.zalgirioarena.lt/en), Karaliaus Mindaugo pr. 50, Kaunas;

One of the greatest Italian pop singer, songwriters and musicians, Toto Cutugno,  maybe best known for his worldwide hit song, «L’Italiano», which was on his hit CD, I Grandi Successi. He won the Eurovision Song Contest 1990. In 1976, Cutugno participated for the first time in the Sanremo Music Festival coming up with third place with his band Albatros with the song, Volo 504. He then won in 1980 with the song «Solo noi», and subsequently finished second in six editions. And now the legendary singer is on the way to Kaunas;

December 21, 6 pm:

Concert «90s Legends» (Koncertas «Devyniasdešimtųjų legendos»), «Švyturys» arena («Švyturio» arena)  (www.svyturioarena.lt/events), Dubysos g. 10, Klaipėda;

The music legends of the 1990s, Lian Ross, «Bad Boys Blue» and «LondonBeat», invite all to turn time back and sway again to the best tunes of the nineties…

December 21, 8 pm:

Magic Martynas Levickis «Classic Live Show» (Magiškas akordeonisto Martyno Levickio šou); «Žalgiris» arena («Žalgirio» arena) (www.zalgirioarena.lt/en), Karaliaus Mindaugo pr. 50, Kaunas;

«The amazingly talented Martynas Levickis, the man who is single-handedly reinventing the accordion» The Independent wrote of him. Praised by The Times for his «mastery of an instrument once dismissed as a squeezebox», accordionist Martynas Levickis has captivated audiences and critics alike with his musicality, charisma and dynamic performances. Martynas is a dedicated ambassador for his instrument, widely admired for his virtuosic performances in classical and contemporary genres. Now he will showcase his mastery to Kaunas audience;

December 23, 7 pm:

Leon Somov&Jazzu Concert (Leono Somovo ir Džiazu koncertas); «Švyturys» arena («Švyturio» arena) (www.svyturioarena.lt/events), Dubysos g. 10, Klaipėda;

One the brightest stars of Lithuanian pop music scene are to throw out a unique concert at the largest Klaipėda concert hall.

December 23, 7 pm:

Rock Opera «Jesus Christ Superstar» (Roko opera «Jezus Kristus superžvaigždė»);«Žalgiris» arena («Žalgirio» arena) (www.zalgirioarena.lt/en), Karaliaus Mindaugo pr. 50, Kaunas;

The opera offers a free interpretation of the psychology of Jesus and the other characters….Contemporary attitudes and sensibilities, as well as slang, pervade the lyrics, and ironic allusions to modern life are scattered throughout the depiction of political events. The opera is star studded with the best artists from Lithuania and abroad alike;

December 22-23:

Upton Christmas: Last Minute Market (Kalėdų «paskutinės minutės» turgelis); Arts Factory «Loftas» (Loft) (Menų fabrikas «Loftas») (www.menufabrikas.lt/events), Švitrigailos g. 29, Vilnius;

The arts hub gives a helping hand to all those in a rush for the best presents. There one will find more than 100 trendiest designers and creators, thousands of present ideas – from handmade to must have hits of the season, delicious street food, mulled wine and hear the most exciting music tracks.

December 25:

The 3D Fairy Tale (Trijų D Pasaka); Cathedral Square (Vilniaus Katedra), Gedimino pr. 1, Vilnius;

The 3D Fairy Tale is the biggest Christmas attraction in Vilnius, and attracts over 120,000 visitors each year. A unique 3D projection of a Christmas Fairy Tale called «Sophia’s Star Map» is projected in all its vivid colours on the main outside wall of Vilnius Cathedral, and Sophia invites all to come and enjoy the magical journey of music and light on Christmas Eve.

Estonia's new road tax payment criticised by road hauliers

As the new road tax has entered into force in Estonia in 2018, the country's Association of Estonian International Road Carriers has commented after the first two weeks of its implementation that a key problem is that the state has not granted truck drivers the possibility to pay the road tax at gas stations in addition to the existing way paying the tax online.

Marriott International hotel network enters Latvia’s market

NP: Reizniece-Ozola and Kučinskis are proud of tax reform, businessmen are not

Latvia’s tax system underwent serious reforms before the country entered 2018. Until now officials only mentioned the benefits – businessmen will no longer have to pay tax for profits if they reinvest money in business development, the majority of small wage recipients will become several dozen euros richer.
