Chief of State Police: Transport Ministry should be responsible for speed cameras

«I believe it would be a good solution if Transport Ministry takes responsibility for the future of the speed camera project,»- says Chief of State Police Ints Kuzis.
Kuzis underlined that the best outcome would be ensuring continuous maintenance of the deployed speed cameras, adding, that it is hard to say how this issue will be resolved.
When asked whether the State Police could take up responsibility for this project, Kuzis said in an interview to Dienas Bizness that it is within the police’s competency to determine proper speed camera deployment sites, distribute protocols, review complaints etc., but the State Police is not involved in economic activities.
The head of SP admitted that «cooperation between the State and private sector, at least in terms of speed cameras, did not meet expectations.» According to him, State structure should be responsible for this now.
As it is known, in accordance with the contract’s conditions, SP will terminate the contract with the supplier of speed cameras – Vitronic – on September 28.
Internal Affairs Minister Rihards Kozlovskis noted earlier that Vitronic Baltica’s written explanations were not enough to consider further cooperation. However, the minister could not say what awaits the deployed speed cameras after September 28, if the contract with the company is terminated. Decision regarding this issue will be made during September.

Is there any other country within the EU (or elsewhere) which faced such difficulties? Amazing how much time and money went into this project. Never heard of any similar mess
May be Somalia or Guyana are facing up the same mess.After all Latvia may be not an exeption.
