Daudze: Latvia has to search for cooperation options with Russia

Saeima speaker’s associate Gundars Daudze

Although Latvia and Russia find it difficult to agree on certain topics, as neighbouring states we have to maintain a dialogue and search for cooperation options, said Saeima speaker’s associate Gundars Daudze during his meeting with Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Russian Federation Evgeny Lukyanov on Tuesday, 14 February.

The ambassador had arrived to visit the Saeima for the first time.

‘Latvia is open to forming a dialogue with Russia on a parliamentary level. Latvia’s Saeima has formed a work group for cooperation with members of the Russian parliament. We are ready to commence inter-parliamentary cooperation, including exchange of visits,’ Daudze said.

Officials said practical industrial cooperation between the two countries so far has been continuous. Progress is noted in some fields. Progress made in the demarcation of the border are between the two countries is viewed positively.

Daudze invited the Russian side to perform the necessary procedures to conclude the demarcation process as soon as possible. The next Latvian-Russian Intergovernmental Committee’s meeting is planned for May, as reported by Saeima’s press-service.

Daudze also suggested increasing cooperation between Latvia and Russia in the field of logistics. He also voiced the need to reduce obstacles in trading.

During this year’s winter period, Russia has been actively using advantages offered by Latvian ports, the ambassador admitted, adding that he would like to visit transport infrastructure objects outside of Riga. Daudze noted that new cooperation opportunities may open up thanks to transit of Chinese cargoes.

Saeima speaker’s associate mentioned Latvian food processing industry as the one in which it is possible to develop better relations and exports to Russia. Latvia’s side, in the meanwhile, is waiting for a response from Rossselhoznadzor and lifting of import restrictions for Latvian goods.

Officials agreed that cross-border cooperation between the two countries so far has been successful. Projects realized as part of it have been successful and have helped improve border infrastructure and benefit residents on both sides of the border, as reported by Saeima’s press-service.
