Defence Minister: NATO will face new challenges

Defence Minister Artis Pabriks will partake in the International Global Defence seminar in Rome, Italy on June 16-17. The minister will talk about NATO’s role, when the transition period in Afghanistan concludes.
«We have new challenges awaiting us, because social and economic problems in the world can easily become armed conflicts,»- Pabriks says. «Cyber security, energy resource and fresh water availability could be the spheres where our intervention is necessary. Are we – member states of NATO and EU – ready for new challenges?»
During his visit to Rome on July 16, Pabriks will meet with the Italian Defence Minister Admiral Giampaolodi Paopla. The ministers will discuss the security situation in the Middle East; the development of NATO operations, including the transition period in Afghanistan, as well as transit and new NATO command structure issues, Defence Ministry reports.
The minister will discuss the creation of a NATO consultative bureau in Montenegro and the cooperation in terms of military education with Defence Minister of Montenegro Milic Pejanovic-Djurisic.
The seminar will also include discussions on the results of the Chicago summit; the effect of the “Arab spring” on the situation in Northern Africa and the whole world, as well as new security challenges: cyber security, illegal immigrants and the influence of the financial crisis on defensive capabilities of different countries.
Defence Ministers, commanders of armed forces, military and political leaders from NATO, EU and UN will participate in the international global security seminar. More than 30 countries from Europe, North and South America, as well as Asia will be represented.
