Economy Minister: we need to strengthen proper port management principles
Latvian Economy Minister Daniels Pavluts, Council of Foreign Investors in Latvia and its influential representative, a delegate in the Baord of Riga Free port, Girts Greiskals have signed a memorandum on mutual understanding, thereby clearly stating the principles of cooperation, which they will be obliged to follow after Greiskalns’ approval to the post of a member of the Board of Riga Free port.
«One of the priorities of the Economy Ministry – is state company management reformation and the creation of a high-quality corporate management practice. But these principles also relate to the activities of ports – their activities will be more transparent, effective and will bring more benefits to Latvia’s economy. The memorandum on mutual understanding not only states and strengthens these principles, but also provides that Greiskalns as a member of the Board of RFP will represent the interests of the state and the port, not some specific organization of businessmen of companies. He will not allow a situation of a conflict of interests; decisions will be carried out in a transparent manner, professionally and fairly. We are expecting active and professional work from our ministry’s representative, so that all possibilities and advantages that can be offered by Latvian ports to its economy are used to their full extent,»- Pavluts points.
The term of office of the current ministry representative in the Board of RFP Olafs Pulks have ended on May 8, which is why the Economy Minister called the largest business organizations (Confederation of Employers of Latvia, the Latvian Chamber of Commerce and the Foreign Investors Council in Latvia) to propose their own candidate to represent the Economy Ministry. Eight candidates were proposed. After the evaluation and interview by the selection commission, Greiskalns turned out to the most perspective candidate. The Cabinet of Ministers will make its decision concerning his appointment on Tuesday, June 26.
Greiskalns graduated from Riga Technical University (RTU), received his Bachelor of Engineering Science in Economics and qualified as an economist in the organization and planning of international economic relations, as well as a Master’s degree in management of international economic relations. He is the current Executive Director of the Foreign Investors Council in Latvia. His duties include proposing candidates and resolving questions related to improving business environment and increasing Latvia’s competitiveness. Earlier, Greiskalns worked at the Embassy of UK and Ireland in Latvia, at Parex Broker System, as well as at the SRS Customs Department and the Ministry of Internal Affairs.
