Baltic news, News from Latvia, BNN.LV, BNN-NEWS.COM, BNN-NEWS.RUApproximately 20% of Latvian patients undergoing treatment of cardiovascular diseases are diagnosed with either heart attack or stroke.

According to information from the statistical study on the function of hospitals, Latvian doctors recorded an average of 8,500 stroke and 3,800 acute myocardial infarction cases over the course from 2009 to 2014. This makes up 20% of more than 66,500 patients suffering from cardio vascular diseases.

The majority of them had experienced precursor symptoms of cardio vascular diseases – heredity, diabetes, obesity, high blood pressure, heart failure, atherosclerosis, high cholesterol, etc. Once the irreversible happens and the patient is released from the hospital after a week or two of treatment, it is necessary to begin rehabilitation as soon as possible. In the most serious cases, this means changing habits and entire lifestyles. In other cases, it means restoring movement capabilities to a level comparable to before the stroke or infarction. It is best to book cardio-therapy, which is provided as part of state financed programmes in rehabilitation centres, in advance, as long queues can delay it by 2-4 months depending on the state of the patient.

Artjom Kalinin, cardiologist of Pļavnieki polyclinic notes that assistance from a rehabilitation specialist is vital after a patient suffers an infarction. It will help the patient understand the situation and risks involved, because sometimes patients are not even aware they’d even had an infarction to begin with. «Nowadays, when treatment methods are very effective, the patient has to be aware of and understand the factors that caused the infarction and reconsider their outlook on life to prevent a repeat,» – he explained. He believes medical personnel do not have enough time to provide all patients with the care they require. The doctor notes that rehabilitation has to be launched as soon as possible after an incident. Rehabilitation is a team effort that should be performed by the patient, family members and rehabilitation specialist together.
