The fate of the speed camera project could be determined today

Today, August 28, the government will decide the outcome of the current situation surrounding the deployment of speed cameras on Latvian roads, as well as further contractual obligations with Vitronic Baltica and partners. «Currently only 27 stationary and 30 mobile speed cameras out of the planned 160 speed cameras are deployed. Contract obligations are not met, deadlines are all but over,»- comments Internal Affairs Minister Rihards Kozlovskis.
When asked whether it is planned to terminate the contract with Vitronic, Kozlovskis said in an interview to 900 seconds of LNT: «I cannot say what course we are currently following. The government will decide on it today.»
The minister noted a possibility of the contract’s termination, as well as the buyback of the speed cameras that are already deployed. He also said that the ministry has its own solution to the situation. He refused to reveal this solution at this time. «Given the fact that there is a contract, the situation needs to be resolved so that tax payers are not involved,»- Kozlovskis said. He also added that an announcement of a new contract would rupture the project for two years, but speed cameras are needed now.
According to the minister, it is possible that the government could decide on the fate of the speed camera project on Tuesday, August 28 (final deadline – September 4).
BNN previously reported that the situation with Vitronic’s creditors and the company’s financial difficulties, the court received a request to initiate legal protection initiation on July 26.
Vitronic is certain that legal protection will allow the company to settle all misunderstandings with its creditors and finish the socially important project that will serve as a valuable example for all future public and private partnership projects in Latvia.
The State Police, on the other hand, has announced its plan to sever the contract with the company. As a reason for this intention, the State Police mention that the company failed to fulfill its contract obligations and deploy 160 speed cameras on Latvian roads.

If government would be really interested in public safety would deploy speed cameras (even a lot of them) only in strategic places (road segments with the highest accidents rates), signaling them.
Unfortunately, government is just interested in imposing another tax on drivers without calling it tax.
