Food Union once again reduces milk procurement prices due to the milk crisis

Baltic news, News from Latvia, BNN.LV, BNN-NEWS.COM, BNN-NEWS.RUIn relation to the continuing crisis in the dairy industry, reduced production prices and overproduction of fresh milk in Latvia, Food Union has decided to reduce prices on dairy products.

The company has decided to apply discounts for all Limbažu piens products in order to continue procuring fresh milk from local farmers at current volumes. Throughout 1 May – 30 June, the price of Limbažu piens milk (1l) and kefir (1l) will cost EUR 0.65. Limbažu piens cottage cheese and sour cream will cost EUR 0.69, as reported by the company.

«The crisis is not over; it is clearly demonstrated by store shelves. Two years ago, 1l of milk cost close to EUR 1. Last year, it cost around EUR 0.80. Now milk costs EUR 0.65 per 1l. It is not good for the dairy industry, but good for consumers. We currently search for ways to satisfy buyers’ needs at attractive prices and increase milk consumption and transform it to direct support to farmers,» – explains Chairman of Rīgas piena kombināts Normunds Stanevics.

«Limbažu piens is one of Latvia’s all-time most popular dairy product brands – a leader in price and quality ratio. Loyalty of Latvian buyers towards Limbažu piens can help nearly 400 Latvian farmers to survive the crisis. The support mechanism is simple – the more Limbažu piens products are bought, the longer we will be able to procure fresh milk produced by local farmers in current volumes and pay farmers above the average procurement price in the country,» – adds Stanevics.

Price reduction applies to all Limbažu piens products – milk, kefir, cottage cheese and sour cream.

«Seeing as how the dairy crisis is prolonged, Food Union carried out emergency measures in order to improve milk processing efficiency. We have reduced warehouse maintenance costs by 40%, milk procurement logistics costs by 25% and end product logistic supply costs by 20%. By making our production more effective, we have managed to save EUR 3 million last year. EUR 2 million of that amount was diverted to the maintenance of competitive milk procurement prices. Thanks to this, we have managed to pay 5% larger prices to farmers,» –said Stanevics.
