Baltic news, News from Latvia, BNN.LV, BNN-NEWS.COM, BNN-NEWS.RUHarmony/Honour to Serve Riga, Latvian Association of Regions/For Latvia’s Development, Union of Greens and Farmers, National Alliance and Unity will likely overcome the 5% barrier at the municipal elections in Riga. The New Conservative Party will not enter the city council, according to Betsafe bookmakers.

The rating of the New Conservative Party in Riga is not very good – only 2.7% of Riga residents would be prepared to vote for ex-Justice Minister Janis Bordans’ and Jutas Strīķe’s party.

Still, ratings do not always reflect voters’ true choice in elections. In addition, the general popularity of the New Conservative Party is sufficiently high for the party to enter television debates. With that, it is too soon to write off the New Conservative Party. Betsafe bookmakers evaluate the chances of Bordans’ party to enter Riga City Council with 33% probability.

Martins Bondars can feel safe about his chances of entering the city council, bookmakers say. Still, he should expect nothing more than a place in the opposition, because the list of candidates compiled by the Latvian Association of Regions and For Latvia’s Development is not expected to receive more than 7% of votes. The National Alliance and Union of Greens and Farmers are in a similar position. Some of Unity’s voter could also vote in favour of the New Conservative Party. Because of that, Unity’s support in Riga has declined to 3.4%. Still, Betsafe views Unity’s chances of overcoming the 5% barrier with a 60% probability.

Bookmakers believe other parties’ chances of entering the city council are minimal. Betsafe predicts that KPV LV will have the best result among other parties. Nevertheless, this is largely thanks to Artuss Kaimins, because without him on the list, the party’s chances of entering the city council would be no higher than 20%.

Although Betsafe predicts the current opposition parties to enter Riga City Council, Harmony and Honour to Serve Riga will likely receive more than half of seats, bookmakers say. This is why the possibility of Nils Usakovs being removed from his seat as mayor of Riga is given a possibility of 8%.

Such behaviour will not help resolve the crisis. It could instead pull the country’s financial sector in a much deeper crisis,» says chairman of For Latvia’s Development Juris Pūce.
