G8 focus of attention - situation in Syria

Hillary Clinton
During the meeting in Washington, United States of America, foreign affairs ministers of G8 countries are planning to discuss a range of questions, including the difficult situation in Syria, negotiations with Iran concerning the nuclear programme, and the upcoming long-distance rocket launch in North Korea.
USA State Secretary Hillary Clinton said this meeting will provide an opportunity to discuss several global problems which can be solved only by all G8 countries together. Still, the most important question is the situation in Syria, Golos Ameriki reported.
«We are worried about the continuous violence in Syria and problems which were faced by the special envoy for Syria Kofi Annan when he tried to convince both sides to stop military activities and put a full-stop to violence,» Clinton emphasized.
USA, France and United Kingdom want the Syrian President Bashar al-Assad to recede, so that the country could become democratic and violence which have lasted already for 13 months could finally stop. Russia is of opposite opinion and supports Assad – Clinton and Russian Foreign Affairs Minister Sergey Lavrov are going to have a special meeting about the Syrian question. But in relation to the Iranian nuclear programme the USA State Secretary said there is still a time for diplomacy, but it is necessary to return Iran to negotiations, as well as to create such conditions which provide specified results during purposeful negotiations.
Commenting on the planned launch of North Korean long-distance rocket Clinton said it is a violation of the UN Security Council resolutions, therefore it is necessary to discuss how to ensure a possibly high safety and stability.
During the meeting foreign affairs ministers will discuss also such global problems as terrorism, piracy, and lack of democracy in the Middle East and Northern Africa.
