Germany’s President is one step away from retirement
German and international journalist organizations are criticizing German President Christian Wulff, who attempted to prevent the publication of compromising materials by influencing Bild newspaper management.
Earlier Bild newspaper confirmed that Christian Wulff tried to prohibit the publication of materials that talked about him receiving a private credit of 500 000 EUR from the spouse of his businessman friend. BBC writes with reference to Deutsche Welle.
As it turned out, this was not a unique case. During summer last year, President Wulff tried to prevent the publication of a material in the Sunday issue of Welt am Sonntag, namely the article depicting his relationship with his half-sister. One of the authors of the article was invited to the presidential residence, and during a heart to heart conversation Wolf said that the publisher will have serious problems should the article be published. The material was published anyway.
Journalist organizations believe that by threatening German publishers, President of Germany has violated the freedom of media. Wulff is obliged to immediately explain his actions, they say.
The opposition demands the president’s retirement. «Christian Wulff has caused substantial damage to the image of a federal president, and therefore the whole of Germany», – Deputy Chairman of the parliamentary faction of the Left Party, Ulrich Maurer believes.
