Baltic news, News from Latvia, BNN.LV, BNN-NEWS.COM, BNN-NEWS.RUHead of Latvia’s State Environmental Service Inga Kolegova has not received unanimous support from the coalition to take the post as head of the State Revenue Service. Nevertheless, the majority of members of the government may yet support her as a viable candidate.

Unity has decided not to support Kolegova as a candidate. This was announced by the party’s leader Andris Piebalgs after the meeting with Kolegova on Tuesday. He added that Unity urges another selection process to be organized. He explained that this decision was made because the party believes the reputation of the head of SRS has to be spotless. «Unity’s decision is not to support this candidate. The reason for this is not so much related to her professional knowledge, but rather that the perfect person for such an important post needs to have an absolutely spotless reputation in terms of official declaration and in terms of transactions that are legal but also very, very hard to understand. No one directly criticized her for those transactions during the discussion. Nevertheless, there are certain people in which have to have spotless reputation,» – said Piebalgs.

The National Alliance, on the other hand, urges its ministers to support Kolegova under the condition that her accomplishments be evaluated after one year of service. Einars Cilinskis mentioned after the meeting of the Coalition Council that ministers of this party will have a free vote. In general, he said, the National Alliance supports Kolegova.

The Union of Greens and Farmers also supports Kolegova. Prime Minister Maris Kucinskis said after the meeting that he finds it sad that Unity decided not to support Kolegova, adding that recognizing her professional skills and not supporting her is a sing against change. «At least that is how I see it,» – said Kucinskis. He believes that a new personnel selection process would lead to an unknown future in December. Having said that, Kucinskis also mentioned he may still bring up this matter at the next government meeting.

Three ministers were absent from the Tuesday’s meeting. Defence Minister Raimonds Bergmanis is away on an official visit to Brazil, Foreign Affairs Minister Edgars Rinkevics and Culture Minister Dace Melnbarde are both on vacation.
