On Monday, May 28, the Greek people were left without news, because mass media workers declared a massive strike. Mass media representative walked out on the streets, thereby expressing their protest against large scale layoffs of media workers and salary reductions.

Since the beginning of the crisis, when Greece was faced with the risk of default, more than 4 000 journalists and other mass media workers have lost their jobs. In the last two years, three large newspapers and one television channel stopped their work, Euronews reports.

«It is not only our work that suffers, but society as well. We want everyone to understand – poor and unprotected workers cannot ensure quality news, and a country cannot exist without news», – president of the Union of Greek Journalists Dimitri Trimis says.

New arrangements presented to the Union by employers provides for the reduction of salaries by 20-30%. The so called «hidden unemployment» is also widespread: when employees do not work full-time, receiving relatively smaller wages for it as well. Greek journalists are not satisfied with these conditions.
