Greek Syriza walks away from coalition talks

Today, May 14, Greek President Karolos Papoulias is set to hold talks with the leading political parties to build an emergency government and avoid new polls.

However, the far-left group Syriza’s leader Alexis Tsipras has announced that he will not attend.

This means the centre-right New Democracy, the Socialist Party (Pasok) and the Democratic Left could make up the coalition.

Tsipras’ move pushes Greece into further political uncertainty, increasing the possibility of yet another election. But there is growing concern that Greek voters would again back parties that oppose austerity measures.

There are no signs that European leaders are willing to renegotiate the deal, so Greece could end up leaving the eurozone.

Both New Democracy and Pasok failed to form a coalition, reports BBC.

Syriza, which came second in the parliamentary election, insists that any new government must cancel austerity measures agreed in return for EU-IMF loans worth 130bn euro.
