A gunman wearing an Afghan uniform has shot to death three American troops in the southern Helmand province, Thursday, August 9.

The three slain troops were members of a U.S. Special Forces team overseeing the training and recruitment of Afghan Local Police. The sources say it was one of the police officers who opened fire on his mentors, CBS News reported.

If confirmed, Thursday’s will have been the second such attack this week. On Tuesday, two gunmen confirmed to have been Afghan National Army soldiers turned their weapons on NATO troops, killing a U.S. service member and wounding two others.

It is not yet clear whether the gunman has fled, or been captured or killed.

BNN already reported that a suicide attack killed three coalition troops in eastern Afghanistan on Wednesday, August 8. The Taliban have claimed responsibility for the assault. On the same day two suicide bombers on foot detonated their explosives outside the provincial council building. At least one Afghan civilian was killed and three were wounded in the blast.

Moreover, a remote-controlled bomb struck a bus travelling northwest of Kabul on Tuesday morning, killing at least nine passengers. Police speculated that the bomber might have tried to target a bus full of government workers but blew up a civilian bus by mistake. No one immediately claimed responsibility for the attack, but Amrullah blamed insurgents affiliated with the Taliban. A second truck bomb exploded at a Nato military base south of the Afghan capital Tuesday, wounding at least a dozen civilians. Taliban insurgents claimed the attack.

The Taliban traditionally steps up attacks in August.

While the Taliban often claim they have infiltrated the Afghan security forces and are carrying out these attacks, the U.S. Defense Department has recently published a report that maintains the attacks are not carried out by insurgents.
