Baltic news, News from Latvia, BNN.LV, BNN-NEWS.COM, BNN-NEWS.RUAs weather becomes gradually colder, green tea is a good choice to stay warm. Not only will it help with keeping warm, but also help strengthen the immune system.

There are different herbs good for treating different symptoms. To avoid mixing different teas all the time, it is a good idea to drink fruit tea mixes. Apotheka pharmacy’s senior pharmacist Ivanda Krastina shares advice on properly brewing green tea and choosing the right herbs.

Green tea is good during the autumn season not just because of its medicinal qualities, but also because drinking tea also provides the body with liquids that help flush viruses, bacteria and toxins from the organism.

Different types of tea for different symptoms:

-Echinacea tea is perfect for strengthening the body’s immune system. This tea has a strong anti-virus and anti-inflammatory effect.

-If you feel symptoms of a cold are getting stronger, drink meadowsweet, lime, sage, raspberry, chamomile and calendula flower tea. All of them have strong anti-bacterial, anti-inflammatory and perspiratory properties. Blackcurrant fruit and leaf, chokeberry fruits and rose fruit teas are rich with vitamins and help increase the body’s defence against viruses.

-Sage, eucalyptus, calendula and chamomile tea can help with sore throat and runny nose. These teas can also be used for rinsing the throat and inhalations.

-If you have a bad cough, drink Iceland moss and pine bud tea.

How to properly brew green tea

The method of preparing tea depends on the herbs.

-If you have tea with leaves, pour boiling water over them and leave for 5-15 minutes. Tea should be warm to drink.

-If the tea consists of fruits or buds, the tea is brewed by pouring cold water over herbs and boiling them, leaving 2-5 minutes on a small flame. After that, tea should be left for 5-10 minutes before it can be served.

How to drink green tea properly

You can safely drink green tea three times a day. It is best to brew a new portion every time. You can brew a big amount for the whole day as well. Don’t keep tea for longer than one day, because the concentration of valuable substances depletes in green tea over time.

Green tea goes well with honey, sugar or lemon. Be sure to keep in mind that the hotter the tea is the less effective medicinal qualities of honey become. Home-made jam goes well with fruit tea.
