By the time Latvia is ready to introduce the fourth generation (4G) mobile Internet, the Chinese telecommunication systems manufacturer Huawei hopes to offer a complete solution chain – the end-user devices for business, Huawei sales manager in Sweden Fredrik Venerstrand indicates in an interview to the business portal Nozare.lv.

As reported, in 2010 Huawei fully modernized the mobile operator Bite Latvija base station network for 17 million euro (11.8 million lats), installing new stations able to provide 4G services with minimal technical changes.

Venerstrand explains the previous experience has shown the 4G network for business clients needs end equipment which in case of the 4G coverage termination can switch to a different mobile Internet standard without interrupting the connection, as well as devices that can share a single high-speed 4G connectivity between multiple users.

«Currently, Huawei has only one 4G modem version, which has the option to switch to a 3G network if the 4G coverage ends, but there will be more than one device in the future. For example, we will have routers. They will split 4G or other mobile Internet signal between several computers. It can be used to, for example, connect the mobile Internet at a temporary office in a construction site, where it is not yet possible to set up an ordinary Internet connection. The device has not been launched on the market yet,» Venerstrand says.

The expert points out there will be greater clarity on the 4G end-user device development after the global mobile industry conference in February. «At the conference Mobile World Congress, which will be held in Barcelona in February 2011, we will publish our «road map» for future development of devices,» Venerstrand reveals.

He specifies that several international companies are taking part in the high-tech telecommunications development to create devices that appear on the market under different brands. The US company Qualcomm, for instance, produces micro chips, which are built into the mobile Internet modems and other mobile communications devices.

«We work with the US micro chip manufacturer Qualcomm to speed up the development process. We know that there is a demand in the market for solutions, yet I cannot say when the device will appear on store shelves. Although this will be well before the end of 2013, when the necessary frequencies for 4G will be available in Latvia,» Venerstrand says.

The Swedish manager indicates that in the future Huawei hopes to strengthen its position also in the Latvian mobile phone market.

«We offer handsets to all Swedish and Scandinavian operators. We use the brand Huawei, and Ideos, which is Huawei Android phone. It was created in collaboration with the operating system developer Google. We wish that it will be possible to offer these products in the Latvian market as well. We will also offer smartphones at reasonable prices, mainly for the use at current high-speed 3G networks. 4G will mainly be the modem and router business,» Venerstrand says.
