With weather gradually becoming warmer, more and more people use the opportunity to spend time outside. According to statistics from BTA Baltic Insurance Company, the number of insurance claims associated with injuries received while doing sports and other forms of active leisure has increased 25% in May and June.
70% of interviewed active recreation fans admit receiving injuries of varying degree of severity once or twice every year. In spite of the high risk of traumas, many active leisure fans – adults and children – admit behaving recklessly in regards to their own safety.
«We have concluded that over the course of the past two years the number of insurance claims associated with injuries received while doing sports or other kinds of activities increases by an average of 20% each year. This can be explained with residents’ growing desire to do sports. Adults and children alike receive injuries in different ways: falling from a bicycle, skates, skateboards or while swimming. We have already received the first insurance claims for injuries received from traditional summer activities. For example, one client suffered a torn muscle while wake-boarding. Several clients, including children, suffered concussions and broken bones while skating,» – notes BTA Insurance Remuneration Department Director Iveta Rijniece.
According to the study, 70% of respondents admit suffering injuries of different kind at least once or twice every year. «In spite of the high risk and often injuries, one-fifth of respondents do not use protective gear of any kind. Those that prefer to use protective gear usually limit their choice to a helmet. Having analysed insurance claim applications, we have concluded that children often receive injuries in cases when they do not use protective gear of any kind. We ask parents to pay close attention to their children and ensure their safety when they do summer activities of any kind,» – notes Rijniece.
Falls or unsuccessful manoeuvres can cost people injuries and damaged equipment. 83% of respondents admit fatally damaging their sports equipment as a result of accidents. «Equipment for active sports can be very expensive. Damage can cost a lot to repair as a result. No matter how careful people can be with their equipment, falling on the ground will damage it. Injuries are also a common sight when it comes to active sports. Skateboarding, wake-boarding, surfing, kite boarding and other kinds more or less extreme sports can cause serious injuries. This is why residents, especially parents, should be especially careful and wears proper protective gear to avoid serious injuries,» – says manager of Monstrerpark and Skatepark Sports Agency Davis Nesenbergs.
