«Thank the government for its lack of spirit, reversed priorities, cynicism and indifference towards Latvian taxpayers,» – said Saeima’s independent deputy Artuss Kaimins in his speech to the parliament.
«Because of this government and this form of thinking, we will continue losing people, who will not have any other way out than to look for work abroad. We will only continue ruining small and medium companies if we continue moving in this direction. They will have no other way out than seek solutions in the grey economy. By continuing down this road we will keep ruining families, leaving them with no support to create their homes and have children,» – Kaimins said, addressing Prime Minister Maris Kucinskis.
«Neo-liberal thinking in the past 25 years has led Latvia and its national economy to the brink of collapse. The government thinks about the development of Latvia’s economy based solely on external factors. They believe Latvia is an open economy that requires investments. The government is worried about creating an environment for investments and foreign capital. The government wholeheartedly believes investments will inevitably bring development. It will happen, they repeat in their neo-liberal belief, development will come if infrastructure is there to support it. The government is ready to dump billions into iron and concrete, but does not provide attention to Latvia’s biggest resource – people. A parallel reality is being created and maintained at the moment. The government tells us that Doing Business rating proves that Latvia has the sixth best business environment in Europe, better than Germany even! What are you people saying? Why this deception? Why are development projects the priority, Maris [Kucinskins], and not the people?» – Kaimins rhetorically asked when addressing the prime minister.
«Let’s look at one of the development projects mentioned in the government’s report. Railway electrification, to be exact. To realize it, Latvian taxpayers will have to pay around EUR 900 million. Co-financing from the European Union will be EUR 347 million – EUR 1.23 billion in total. Why the hell do we even need this project? Cargo volumes decline and will continue to decline. According to estimates from banks, cargo volume decline may reach 30 to 50%. Invest this money into people, education, small and medium companies! Don’t let this money fall in the hands of people close to the political elite if this project is realized or changed,» – added the deputy.
«Let’s thank the government for its neo-liberal way of thinking and that we will be saved by foreign investments, Mr. Kucinskis! Let’s thank the government for its love for concrete and iron, not the people. And let’s thank the government for its grey economy combating measures against taxpayers. Thanks for nothing!» – said Kaimins ironically.
