Baltic news, News from Latvia, BNN.LV, BNN-NEWS.COM, BNN-NEWS.RUKaspersky Lab has found a Trojan virus in the Guide for Pokemon Go app on the official Google Play store. This Trojan virus infects the Android device and takes control over the device once it receives user access rights.

According to Kaspersky Lab experts, more than 500,000 users, fans of Pokemon Go, could become potential victims of this virus. So far, experts have received information about more than 6,000 confirmed infection cases.

The Trojan virus in Guide for Pokemon Go uses vulnerabilities of the operating system to gain access to the main user rights of the device and can also download additional malicious modules and programmes, as well as present an annoying pop-up advert. This malicious software also has a number of interesting functions that helps it avoid detection. For example, the virus does not come online as soon as the app is turned on. Instead, it waits until the user has installed or deleted another app. Then the virus checks if it has been downloaded onto a real, not virtual, device. The virus then waits a couple of hours before finally starting up.

What is particularly interesting is that the function of this malicious piece of software is not completely automatic. The Trojan sends information about the infected device (country, language, model of the device and OS) to the attacker’s server and waits for a response. Only once an approval is received from the command server, the programme starts downloading, installing and launching other malicious modules. This way, cyber criminals select their victims, avoiding those who do not fit as their ‘target audience’.

Guide for Pokemon Go has since been taken down from Google Play. Kaspersky Lab security solutions have classified the programme as HEUR:Trojan.AndroidOS.Ztorg.ad. This is not the first case when malicious software has appeared on an official store page – Kaspersky experts have identified at least nine different apps with the same malicious module that had been made available on Google Play since December 2015.

«No matter where users go on the Internet, cyber criminals follow in their tracks. Pokemon Go is no exception. Victims of this Trojan virus may not even notice its presence on their device. The only factor that exposes it is the annoying pop-up advert. Unfortunately, the consequences of such an infection can be very serious. This Trojan horse gains complete control over the device, including data stored on it,» – explains Kaspersky Lab anti-virus expert Roman Unuchek.
