Kubilius: Visaginas NPP could operate profitably without subsidies

Visaginas Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) could operate profitably without extra subsidies, says the Lithuanian Prime Minister Andrius Kubilius.
Therefore, Lithuania is not joining the appeal addressed to the European Commission by Poland, Czech Republic, France and United Kingdom. The countries request to assign nuclear energy the status of green energy and therefore be subsidised.
“All our calculations show that the Visaginas NPP would operate profitably without any additional subsidy. We see nuclear energy as a really competitive energy, and therefore issues regarding any additional subsidy is not on our agenda,” he says.
According to Kubilius, wind and solar energy subsidies mean that taxpayers pay additionally to renewable energy producers.
Lithuanian PM agrees that nuclear energy is just as clean as sun and wind energy, as it does not produce carbon dioxide emissions. However, he stresses that a lot of countries are cutting subsidies for green energy, as it is becoming a burden to the national budgets, reports The Lithuania Tribune.
