Аuthor: Evija Trifanova/LETAEstonia has the largest proportion of cars per capita among other Baltic States – 0.51. Lithuania’s index reached 0.40 this year. That of Latvia is 0.33, according to the latest barometer survey data of Autoplius.

“This means that Estonians usually have one car per two residents. This index in Latvia is one per three”, – Autoplius development office manager Viktor Daukss told BNN.

A similar situation is shown by the latest car trade data. While there were 2 800 new cars bought in Latvia in Q1 of 2013, which is nearly 200 cars less than there was in the same period of 2012, there was a reduction noted in Lithuania in this regard. 5 400 cars were purchased in Estonia in the beginning of 2013. This is nearly half of all new cars that were bought in the first months of 2013 in the Baltic States.

In spite of the reduction of sales rate of new cars in Latvia. Car market data suggests that the car part of Latvia and Estonia are quite young. The average age of a given vehicle is 13.5 and 13.3 years, while that in Lithuania is 15 years on average.

The most popular brand of cars in the Baltics is Volswagen – 10 500 of these cars were imported to Lithuania last year, 5 000 in Estonia and 4 400 in Latvia. The second most popular brand is Audi. The Top 3 is concluded by Opel cars in Latvia and Lithuania and Ford in Estonia.

Lithuania has the highest proportion of cars that run on diesel fuel (48.7%). 39.9% run on petroleum and the remaining 12% – on LNG. The proportion of cars that run on petroleum is much higher in Estonia – 66.6%. Latvia has more than half of cars running on petroleum – 51.1%.

“Estonia’s proportion of cars running on petroleum engines has increased in the last three years. A similar tendency is found in Latvia as well. The situation in Lithuania is different: the proportion of diesel engine cars has reduced from 77.7% to 73.6%. Cars with diesel engines remain more popular than cars with petroleum engines”, – Daukss says.
