Baltic news, News from Latvia, BNN.LV, BNN-NEWS.COM, BNN-NEWS.RU«The last century has taught us that independence and having your own country are not things that should be taken for granted. Every generation should be prepared to work for the common good, invest in their country’s growth and defend their country if need be,» – said Latvian President Raimonds Vejonis in his speech dedicated to the 24th anniversary since de facto restoration of Latvia’s independence.

«We definitely know and anyone can mention many things that can be done in a better way in our country. With Latvia’s 100th birthday coming up, let us all work together in order to make our Latvia even stronger and more successful! Let’s be proud of our country and work hard to make sure our children are even prouder of Latvia – our home country!» – said Vejonis.

Twenty four years ago – on 21 August, 1991 – the Supreme Council of the Republic of Latvia adopted the constitutional law on the governmental status of the Republic of Latvia. This document marked de facto restoration of independence of the Republic of Latvia – the unclear transitional period to full national independence ended there. The independence of the Republic of Latvia was first restored on 15 February, 1922. After 21 August, 1991, restoration of Latvia’s independence was recognized by other countries and it was possible for us to take charge over our destinies and be free, as stated by the press-service of State President Chancellery.

On 21 August, 1991, we saw clear division of geopolitical borders and the setting of foundation of our country’s basic values. The Constitutional Law made the Republic of Latvia a country bound by western culture, which is based on respecting human dignity, the inviolable human rights, rule of law and social justice. Latvia is a democratic country that wishes to cooperate and integrate closely with other western countries, as mentioned in the Latvian President’s congratulatory speech.

«Today, we can be proud of what we’ve accomplished. We have restored and strengthened our country. Our welfare and opportunities are on a rise; we have returned to the international community and have become rightful members of the European Union and NATO. We have already successfully concluded our presidency over the EU Council. Twenty four years ago all this was a far-away dream. Now it has become a reality,» – said Vejonis.
