According to published reports and images on Twitter, black smoke was seen coming from the museum’s building on Friday. Firefighters are working at the scene.
«We received a call at 11:30, telling us that a fire broke out in the building of the Museum of the Occupation of Latvia. Please stay away, as not to interfere with firefighters’ work!» – the State Fire and Rescue Service wrote in its announcement on Twitter.
Fire on the roof of the museum has been dealt with. However, structure demolition work and efforts to put out remaining fire hazards with water continues, LETA reports.
Viktorija Gribuste, spokesperson of the State Fire and Rescue Service, reports that the fire has yet to be localized.
Firefighters continue working at the scene.
According to LETA, firefighters have begun putting out flames on the top corner of the museum’s roof. The fire supposedly originated on the corner of the building closest to Grecinieku Street and 11 November Waterfront.
The Emergency Health Service has dispatched teams to the scene. Fortunately, there have yet to be any reports on any victims.
Due to the fire, traffic has been closed off on Strelnieku Square and Grecinieku Street.
As reported by the State President’s Chancellery, all personnel have been evacuated from the House of the Blackheads. LETA reports that the House of the Blackheads is not in danger of catching fire.
All exhibits of the museum are safe. Most exhibits had been moved in advance because of scheduled reconstruction work in the museum, as reported by Latvijas Radio.
