Latvian ports cargo turnover drops 1.3% in 2010

Cargo turnover at Latvian ports reached 61.16 million tons last year, it is 1.3% less than in 2009. Ships at Latvian ports loaded and transshipped 55.72 million tons of cargo in 2010, surpassing the indicators of 2009 by 3.2%, according to the Central Statistical Bureau.

The volume of timber loaded at ports in 2010 amounted to 5.41 mln t – 1.6 times more than in 2009, while the volume of mineral fertilizers formed 3.75 mln t – a growth of 23.2%. Along with the growing demand for iron ore in the global markets in early 2010, the volume of iron ore loaded at ports surged 5.1 times, reaching 2.3 mln t. Other major cargo volumes have shrunk – oil products (19.25 mln t) – by 12.3% and coal (15.14 mln t) – by 21%.

5.44 mln tons of cargo were unloaded at Latvian ports in 2010, exceeding the previous year’s indicators by 23%.

Cargo in containers comprised the bulk of cargo unloaded making up 1.38 mln t – 1.5 times more than in 2009, oil products (1.03 mln t) – a drop of 5.8% and roll on/roll off cargo (0.98 mln t) – a climb of 22.2%. Volumes of other most important cargo unloaded have soared as well – construction materials – 1.6 times, grain and grain products – 36%.

Ventspils port loaded and unloaded 24.82 mln t of cargo, which is 6.8% less than in 2009. Cargo loaded shrank by 7.7% amounting to 23.28 mln t, while the volume of cargo unloaded rose 9%.

Riga port cargo turnover climbed 2.5%, forming 30.48 mln t. 27.33 mln t of cargo were loaded – the same figure as in 2009. 3.14 mln t of cargo was unloaded – up 31.1%.

Liepaja port cargo turnover grew 2.5% amounting to 4.38 mln t and surpassing the indicators of 2009 by 0.1%. 3.72 mln tons of cargoes were loaded, 1 % more than in 2009. The volume of cargoes unloaded surged 21.9%.

Cargoes loaded and unloaded at minor ports comprised 1.48 mln tons, exceeding the 2009 indicators by 20.3%.

764 thousand passenger arrivals and departures were registered at Riga port, amounting to a climb of 10.5 %, compared to 2009.

Ventspils port passenger turnover comprised 18.1 thousand persons in 2010, Liepaja port – 10.7 thousand persons.
