Merkel's party suffers defeat in state election

Angela Merkel
German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s party Christian Democrats has suffered major losses in an election in Germany’s most populous state – North Rhine-Westphalia.
Support for the Christian Democrats was down from 35% to 26%, which means the Social Democrats will return to power hand in hand with the Greens.
The election outcome is the Christian Democrats’ worst result in the state.
According to official results, the Social Democrats gathered 39.1%, the Christian Democrats 26.3%, the Greens 11.3%, the Free Democrats 8.6%, the Pirates 7.8% and the Left, 2.5%.
The Pirate Party, which calls for transparency and internet freedom, won seats in North Rhine-Westphalia, while the Left fell short of the 5% threshold.
Analysts say the vote clearly shows that Germans reject Merkel’s fiscal discipline policy.
Similarly, voters in Greece, France and Italy also recently rejected austerity policies, reports BBC.
