At night on 4 January, most of Latvia will experience the strongest blizzard of recent years, meteorologists warn.
No snowfall is expected for Vidzeme’s northern parts. The coldest masses of air since last year’s January will start flowing into the country on Wednesday evening.
The most intensive snowfall in Kurzeme is expected on the night to Wednesday. Blizzard in Zemgale and Riga will begin in the second half of the night; early in the morning in Latgale. The sky will become clear in the evening on Wednesday. Snowfall will continue only in Latgale.
South-east wind will pick up in strength on the night to Wednesday, with speed reaching 14-19 m/sec at times (20-23 m/sec in the north of Kurzeme).
Because of all that, the blizzard is expected to be very powerful.
The layer of snow in Latvia is expected to grow by 6-11 cm on average. Less snow is expected in Vidzeme.
Rain is also expected in Liepaja and South Kurzeme along the coast. With wind turning from the west, air temperature may briefly reach +2° C…+ 4° C.
In other parts of the country, air temperature at night and during the day will range between 0° C… -7° C. Air temperature in Vidzeme may drop to -10° C in the evening. The wind will make it feel even colder – otherwise comfortable air temperature will decline to -19° C… -23° C.
In Riga, snow is expected to come continue from the second half of the night all the way until the afternoon of the next day. Wind speed will reach 15-18 m/sec, causing a blizzard.
