Baltic news, News from Latvia, BNN.LV, BNN-NEWS.COM, BNN-NEWS.RU«Although there are no doubts that coalition forces successfully weaken Da’esh activities in Iraq and Syria, it would be too optimistic to say that defeating Da’esh is a matter of weeks or months. The fight against ISIS/Da’esh is successful, but it will be long. It cannot be delayed by terrorist attacks in Europe, Turkey, USA or anywhere else in the world,» – says Latvian Foreign Affairs Minister Edgars Rinkevics.

On Thursday, 21 July, Rinkevics in Washington took part in a meeting of foreign affairs ministers dedicated to the international coalition’s fight against the threat of ISIS/Da’esh. There, Rinkevics presented Latvia’s position on attempts of the coalition to fight ISIS/Da’esh.

«It is important to establish cooperation with all international coalition forces and other important players – NATO and the EU. This is why Latvia support the decision approved at the NATO summit in Warsaw to support the coalition by supplying information acquired using NATO air force early warning and management system,» – said Rinkevics.

The minister reminded that Latvia has been part of the international coalition since its formation. After the creation of a work group, Latvia joined four out of five groups – military, strategic communication, prevention of financing of terrorism and combating international terrorism. In January 2016, Latvia’s parliament approved the decision to send a ten-man group of experts to help train Iraq’s armed forces as part of Inherent Resolve military operation.

Rinkevics expressed confidence about the need for this plan and the involvement of the international society in the restoration of Iraq and Syria in accordance with rule of law and respect of human rights, as reported by Foreign Affairs Ministry.
