Baltic news, News from Latvia, BNN.LV, BNN-NEWS.COM, BNN-NEWS.RUIn the first quarter of 2017, the number of transit and transfer passengers serviced at Riga International Airport increased by 11%, according to data on the airport’s results for the first three months of 2017.

More than 1.13 million passengers have been serviced so far in Q1 2017, which is 2.6% more than compared with the first three months of 2016. The number of transit and transfer passengers has grown by 11%, reaching 26% of the total number of passengers.

The biggest increase in the number of passengers was noted in January, when the airport serviced 369.6 thousand passengers (4.4% more than in January 2016). The number of passengers serviced in February had increased by 2.5% when compared with last year. The increase in March was 1%, as BNN was informed by the airport.

The number of aircraft serviced in Q1 has increased by nearly 2%: a total of 15.4 thousand aircraft have been serviced at Riga International Airport in the first three months of 2017.

«The beginning of the year is usually the quietest time. People travel less. Nevertheless, Riga airport continued experiencing an increase of the number of serviced passengers. The increase of the number of passengers shows that travellers more and more often pick Riga as a transport hub to travel to other destinations in Europe, Asia and elsewhere in the world. Summer flight offers from different airlines working in Riga allows us to predict an even greater increase of passengers,» says chairperson of the board of Riga International Airport Ilona Lice.

The airport expects an equally large number of arriving and departing flights. This is why passengers are advised to arrive at least 2.5 hours in advance for their flights.

As it is known, during the summer season it will be possible to travel from Riga to 89 destinations around the world. Latvian national airBaltic airline plans to offer a large number of new destinations, including Tampere (Finland,) Odessa (Ukraine), Kazan (Russia), Aberdeen (UK), Stavanger (Norway), Geneva (Switzerland), Catania (Italy), Liepaja (Latvia), Madrid (Spain) and Gothenburg (Sweden).

Wizz Air low-cost airline will open two new destinations for the summer season – Reykjavik (Iceland) and Bari (Italy). Scandinavian Air System will commence flights to Copenhagen (Denmark).

A new airline will start working at Riga International Airport this summer season – Russia’s largest regional carrier RusLine. It will offer flights to Domodedovo Airport in Moscow. Ellinair will offer charter flights to Heraklion (Crete).
