Number of unemployed people in Latvia drops by nearly 54,000

Baltic news, News from Latvia, BNN.LV, BNN-NEWS.COM, BNN-NEWS.RUIn comparison with Q2 of the previous year, the number of active population aged 15-74 in Q2 of this year has diminished by 3%, while compared to Q1 of thus year – by 0.8%. Labour Force Survey results compiled by the Central Statistical Bureau of Latvia show that active population in this age group comprises 1 million 3.7 thousand people or 65.3%, moreover the share of men accounts for 68.8% while the share of women – 62.3%.

In Q2 of 2012, the number of employed persons constituted 889 thousand people or 57.9% of the population aged 15-74 – an increase of 8.8 thousand, as compared to Q1 of 2013. As compared to Q2 of the previous year when there were 866.7 thousand employed persons comprising 55.6% of the population aged 15-74, the number of employed persons indicates a rise, according to the Central Statistical Bureau of Latvia.

Women in the total number of employed persons comprised slightly higher share than men – 51.3% and 48.7%, respectively. Only 4.6% of them did not work due to various reasons, e.g., vocation, illness, childcare leave, education or training. The number employed persons includes 6.4 thousand people, which still having the status of unemployed during the reference week were employed.

Within the framework of the Labour Force Survey also information on wages and salaries was acquired. In comparison with Q2 of the previous year, the share of employees receiving minimum monthly wage or less has reduced, while slight increase was recorded in the group of people receiving more than LVL 200.

Compared to the previous year, the share of employees receiving LVL 200.01 – LVL 300.00 has grown by 1.3 percentage points, while rise in the group of employees receiving LVL 300.01 – LVL 500.00 comprises 2.6 percentage points, and in group LVL 500.01 – LVL 1000.00 – 1.5 percentage points. In its turn, the share of employees receiving less than LVL 200 during the year has diminished by 5.6 percentage points, of which the share of people receiving minimum monthly wage or less has dropped by 4.1 percentage point.

In Q2 of 2013, the number of unemployed persons aged 15-74 comprised 114.7 thousand – 53.8 thousand people less, as compared to the corresponding period of the previous year, and 16.8 thousand persons less, in comparison with Q1 of this year. Unemployment rate (share of unemployed persons in total active population) constituted 11.4%, and during the year it has reduced by 4.9 percentage points (16.3% in Q2 of 2012).

In comparison with the corresponding period of the previous year, the number of inactive population aged 15-74 in Q2 of this year has risen by 1.4 % and it comprised 532.4 thousand people; while in Q1 of this year the number of inactive population comprised 524.4 thousand.

Particular attention in this group should be given to the persons who are potential unemployed, but have been discouraged or do not know where and how to find a job. Survey results show that, during the reference quarter, discouraged persons accounted for 28.2 thousand or 5.3% of the inactive population. As compared to Q2 of 2012, their number has increased by 3.1 thousand, while, in comparison with Q1 of this year, the number has decreased by 4.4 thousand.
