Palanga city mayor Šarūnas Vaitkus has promised to agree with Russia on relocation of a Soviet warriors’ cemetery which is currently located in the city’s centre, BBC reported.
«We will try to resolve this issue. Besides, the initiative comes from the city’s people. But we won’t do it forcibly as five years ago Estonia did with the relocation of the warrior’s bronze monument in Tallin. We will do it in a civilized manner by finding a compromise with the Russian Embassy in Lithuania,» Palanga mayor said.
«First of all we have to explain that relocation of the cemetery away from the city’s centre means only reburial of Russian warriors’ remains in the city’s cemetery or any other place which fits for this purpose and is outside the city’s centre,» the politician explained.
The former head of the Supreme Council of Lithuania and current EP deputy Vytautas Landsbergis has also said that the city’s centre opposite to the Catholic church is not an appropriate location for the Soviet warriors’ cemetery.
