On Sunday, 6 September, Latvian basketball team lost in the finals of D-sub group of the European Championship to their Lithuanian competitors with a score of 49:68 (19:13, 9:16, 11:20, 10:19).
This marks Latvia’s first loss in the championship. The next game is scheduled for Monday, 18.30. Latvia will face Czech Republic on the field. This has already become the least productive game of Latvian basketball players in the European Championship since the restoration of independence.
Kaspars Berzins and Rolands Freimanis proved to be Latvia’s most productive players in this match. Both earned their team eight points each. Six of those points were earned in the first minutes of the match.
Janis Blums and Dairis Bertans each earned their team six points.
Lithuania’s team also had an outstanding performance by Jons Valančūns, who earned his team 15 points. Jons Mačulis earned his team 13 points and Mants Kalnietis earned 12 points.
This is the tenth time Latvia takes part in the European Basketball Championship since the restoration of independence. Up until now Latvia’s best result was achieved in 2001, when Latvia earned 8th place.
