Late on Monday, September 10, eight Latvian athletes returned home from London Paralympic Games.

Riga International Airport was full of supporters and top officials, who all greeted the Paralympians.

Cheering supporters welcomed home Aigars Apinis (Men’s Shot Put, Men’s Discus Throw), Rihards Snikus (equestrian), Taiga Kantane (Women’s Shot Put, Women’s Discus Throw), Liene Gruzite (Women’s Shot Put), Janis Plotnieks (Men’s 100m Backstroke), Dmitrijs Silovs (Men’s Long Jump), Edgars Klavins (Men’s Long Jump) and Andis Ozolnieks (Men’s Shot Put).

As reported, 2012 Paralympic Games have rounded up in London, with Latvia ranking the 47th in the total medal count.

Latvian athlete Aigars Apinis won two medals – a gold in shot put and a silver in discus throw.

This brings Apinis’ total Paralympic medal count to seven. In 2004 and 2008, he won a gold but in 2008 a bronze medal in discus throw.

Also, the athlete has earned a full medal set in shot put. He earned a gold this year, a silver four years ago in Beijing and a bronze in Sydney back in 2000.
