One of the oldest and most beautiful buildings in Latvia has recovered its historic majesty. Following an order from Valsts nekustamie īpašumi, SBRE, which consists of RE&RE and Skonto Būve, has been working hard on the project for the past three years.
The entire complex of Riga Castle was formed as a result of consecutive historic changes. It has gone a long way – from the headquarters of the Livonian Order to the residence of the President of the Republic Of Latvia. Each section of the castle was once used for a specific purpose. It still holds piece of history almost in every room.
The President’s office and meeting halls have been restored in the Chancellery of the President quarters. The same applies to the President’s Press Service quarters and representation quarters. Each room has had its historic look restored and brought up to date with modern functionality and quality.
Chairman of Riga Castle Restoration Council Imants Lancmanis said during the festive opening that this day was indeed a happy one for all people involved in this project: «Each century and each reconstruction had contributed to art and architecture. Even the Festive Hall has experienced both happy and dramatic moments. In 1938 President Ulmanis could welcome 1,038 guests here. Two years later, in 1942, the ceiling was given paintings, which were then prohibited. It is one of the marvels of the castle – ideologically the castle is not finished and can never be finished. We have carried out a massive amount of work together and this work was carried out with an unbelievable amount of dedication. I wish this building will serve to great and make all of us feel happy and welcome and become the best Christmas gift to Latvia!» – said Lancmanis.
«This day is a great day not just for us, builders, but also those who gathered here today. We are incredibly happy with everything that has been done over the past three years in spite of many challenges. I believe the names of the people that worked on this project will be written in the annals of history in a century or two. During the castle’s restoration work, builders uncovered a never before seen masterpiece – an 1515 moulding of the Grandmaster of the Livonian Order Walter von Plettenberg. We would like to give copies of this moulding to all people who have been invaluable to this project,» – said Re&RE Director General Didzis Putnins.
Reconstruction work continues in the castle. The second stage of reconstruction will focus on the Kastela part. Development of the construction project is done and coordination has begun. In parallel to design work procurement for construction services has been announced. It is planned to sign the contract for construction work in June 2016.
