Baltic news, News from Latvia, BNN.LV, BNN-NEWS.COM, BNN-NEWS.RUPersonalized Christmas cards and family calendars are becoming more and more popular in the world. This is why the immortalisation of the perfect family portrait has become even more popular because of Christmas.

Canon and famous portrait photographer Christian Anderl have compiled several pieces of advice on how to take the ideal family photo.

Composition and positioning

When picking positions for your family members, avoid matching their heads in a straight line or putting them in order based on height. You don’t want your family to look like a queue to a carousel, do you? Instead put them in a specific and natural composition. Let some of them sit and others stand. What is important is creating a diverse composition.

Make the photo stylish

We all know how hard it is to organize the family in a way that would exclude all unnecessary elements from the shot, especially in regard to clothes.

Family photos you want to send as post cards should feature you and your family members wearing similar clothes (style or colour, etc.). If it is impossible to convince your relatives to coordinate their clothes they want to wear or if the colours mismatch each other, you can always make the photo black and white.

Immortalizing facial expressions

It is not enough to push the button and hope for the best – photos taken in such a way are often unsuccessful: unhappy faces and several relatives in uncomfortable poses. In order to help people relax, try laughing with them to relieve some of the tension. But don’t overdo it – forced joy never looks good on photos. In order to avoid forcing people to smile or do something else, focus on minor things: ask them to refrain from blinking and at least imagine something pleasant.

Let children be children

When taking photos of children, remember not to force them do anything. Children are incapable of standing still. Do not ever force them to do anything they don’t like. You will only get bored faces or capricious children in the shot – which is not the most pleasant of sights. Let them do the craziest, strangest things they can come up with. Have some fun along with them. Your reward will be a lively and spontaneous image that will be immortalized for all times.

Be together in the shot

This is the most important piece of advice: whether you are a professional photographer or just want to immortalize your loved ones – do not take yourself too seriously. Creation of memories and feelings is the most important thing in the art of photography. When you look at a photo 20 years later, you want to recall the feeling you felt at that exact moment. Put the camera on a tripod and put it on focus – have fun with your family and enjoy the moments you spend with them. Everyone will have fun and you will have a much better result altogether.
