PLK Flote increases the number of its tugboats

PKL Flote has signed a contract with Chernomorsky Shipyard, Ukraine, for the assembly of an azimuthal tugboat with 5 000 horsepower. According to the terms of the contract, the finished model will be at PKL Flote’s disposal in summer of 2013.
This new model is planned to be used in Riga port along with two Castor tugboats. These tugboats are al of the same class, and have already proven their worth in Riga, the company reports.
PKL Flote constantly works on upgrading its fleet – twelve new tugboats were constructed in the last year. These tugboats are currently operational in Estonia, Finland and Latvia, Ventspils.
The new tugboat will be an ARC4-class icebreaker, which will enable operations in areas with one-meter-thick ice. In addition to that, the tugboat is equipped with a very powerful external fire extinguishing system. It will also be possible to use the vessel to provide escort tugboat services – accompany ships carrying dangerous cargo, provide emergency assistance and prevent potential catastrophes. Furthermore, the tugboat can be used not only to service ships within the port but also to break ice and provide towing services in the Gulf of Riga.
The Chernomorsky Shipyard came up with the best offer in terms of price/quality comparison. Besides, PKL Flote cooperated with the company in the past, which built four of PKL‘s tugboats.
