Poetry days: programme of events for 7-10 September

Baltic news, News from Latvia, BNN.LV, BNN-NEWS.COM, BNN-NEWS.RUSeptember is traditionally associated in Riga and all of Latvia as the month of poetry. In order to make orientation in the massive festival programme more accessible, organizers of Poetry Days offer a compilation of events for the week.

Monday, 7 September, 18:00: people are invited to come to metaphysical poetry readings ‘Riba’ on Maza krasta street 31. Many different authors are expected to participate. Psychotherapist Viesturs Rudzitis is expected to attend this event.

Castle of Light will begin a series of poetry readings. The first event is called ‘The poet is talking’. At 19:00, poets Henriks Eliass Zēgners, Toms Treibergs, Artis Ostups, Valts Ernštreits and Svens Kuzmins will read their work on stage. The evening will conclude with a multimedia poetry performance ‘Victims of Multitasking’ in Kanapes Culture Centre (Slokas 15) at 20:00. Poets Arturs Punte and Yelena Glazova will try to reflect the image of everyday multitasking burden in an experimental show. They will also try to demonstrate the other side of multitasking. This performance will be held in Russian language.

Tuesday, 8 September, 13:00: the bulk of attention will be drawn to readers of the youngest generation. Šķūnis Café of LU Botanical Garden (Kanadavas 2) will hold a special Poetry Day event for children. In it, poet Inese Zandere will lead the presentation of the second poetry book for children ‘Garā pupa’. At 17:00 everyone will be invited to travel to Jurmala, where visitors will be invited to ‘have tea with Aspazija’ in the famous Latvian poet’s home (Z.Meierovica Prospect 18/20). Foreign guests will include Martyna Buliżańska (Poland), Anuar Duisenbinov (Kazakhstan).

At 19:00 KTMC ‘Ritums’ (Jauniela 29a) will open up with poetry’s performance side, with ten youngest poets tasked with preparing three works and performing them in front of a live audience. The contest will assess not only poetry, but also its performance. The evening will conclude at 20:00 with an event with American authors in Zirgu street concert hall (Kalku street 11a). In it, Karlis Verdins and Arvis Viguls will read works of different American authors in their Latvian translation. Janis Ozolins will provide ambience with music composed by classic American minimalist Philip Glass.

On Wednesday, 9 September, residents and guests will have an opportunity to attend the traditional ‘Atvērt nevar aizvērt’ event at 18:00. During this event, authors Andris Ogriņš, Reinis Runcis, Ieva Rupenheite, Dmitrijs Sumarokovs, Elīna Bākule-Veira, Inese Zandere and Anita Mileika will read their works.

Thursday, 10 September, will have an unusual composition in terms of events – NicePlace Mansards (Kr.Barona 21a) book store will have a poetry reading event in Liv language at 18:00. Modern-day Liv writers Baiba Damberga, Valts Erstreits and Kempju Karlis will participate in this event. At 19:00, there will be multiple different event in three separate places. Lithuanian language will be the focus in Latvia’s National Library. Guests from Lithuania Daiņus Gintals, Giedre Kazlauskaite, Mindaugs Nastaravičs and Artūrs Vaļonis will participate in this event.

All events of Poetry Days are free of charge.
